1st time grower w/ NO gardening knowledge
    #2449908 - 03/19/04 01:40 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Gday,

Soon I will be receiving two cactii;

1) Trichocereus Pachanoi,
2) T. Bridgessi

As I said, I have no experience/knowlege of gardening/growing, this will be my first attempt, so what tips or advise can you give me on making this a success?

From the size of the pot, to what I put around the cactus, to watering, any info would help!

Thanks

...I've just been reading a bit and the only Trichocereus cacti mentioned are Pachanoi and Peruvianus..

Is this because they have the highest mescaline content? How does T. Bridgessi compare with them?

it is Trichocereus bridgesii.
and the plural of cactus is cacti, not cactii.

well, you asked for it. i'm sorry to do it in such a cruel way. =)

are you saying that to know a bit of latin is not useful? geebus.
are you unfamiliar to books, search sites, lazy or dumb?
a trip to the closest library can be very rewarding...

if i'm bored is a bit off topic.

good luck.
greek and latin are cool.
rock'n'roll!

a few tips

a little bit heat from the bottom is good but not a must

sterilize the soil , 200 degrees in a oven 20 minutes should do it

good drainage

cover the pot with plastic or somethng and keep the soil damp, have this plastic on a week or two after cactus has sprouted, its important not to let the seedlings get direct sunlight or big temperature changes , drafts and such, they need some tme to get strong

use rainwater, avoid tapwater, avoid alkaline water\soil

dont overwater it, if it starts to show signs to overwatering you need to start cutting it away where it show signs. let the soil dry out good always before more water

It's very slow.

Full sun position. Pref. hot position in a paved area. When winter comes, move in under the eves to avoid the frosts. I don't get snow, but they survive -6C with ease.

Pots be terracotta so the media dries out. Place a few stones in the base over the drainage hole so it drains fast.

Media, gravel 1 part to 1 part old leached potting mix with 1" gravel on the top to prevent washout of media in the rain. You can buy cacti mix too, that's basically what it is, gravel and potting mix. Fertiliser to use, osmocote. It releases slow. Go 1/4 strength. Water, leave that up to the rain. Neglect is best.

Back when I got them -- some left overs sent in a trade lol.

As it is now. In pic, 5 x T.pachanoi, 2 x T.peruvianus and 1 x T.bridgessi. Mine are due for a fert, a tad low in N, hence the yellowing. Better to go under than over. Too much ferts and water will make for sappy growth and prone to pathogens, that's if the excess water doesn't rot out the roots.
