Trials with Ps. hoogshagenii var convexa semperviva 5

This is my first time working with this wonderful species, and I have to say they are awesome to view. Below are a couple of pics of a much better 2nd flush. The first flush was unfortunately badly neglected due to a family emergency. But after rehydration of the substrate and casing layer, they bounced back pretty nicely.

Holy shit dude! I think that may be the best grow I've ever seen with that species. Damn good work.
Did you do a grow log by chance?

Thank you for the kind words. I think it can be better and I plan on working with these guys a bit more. I have some cloned material colonizing agar as we speak from the 1st flush. Plus I'm going to experiment a bit with bulk substrate composition. Those were just grown in pp5 containers using simple BRF cake sub inoculated via LI. Sorry no grow log but I do have a shit ton of pictures.
They are a wonderful species for sure. I look forward to working with them.

Thanks again for all the many nice comments!
mushpunx, The substrate was BRF cake material sterilized in a small pp5 container. I had no idea if that would be a good sub for them, but decided to give it a go. I have read about TCO's adventures with them using the same formula, substituting ground hulled millet in place of the BRF. And I had an agar jar that exploded with primordia very quickly. So I thought if they will form primordia on agar, they might be good on just about any grain source.
My next trials with them is to try a few different combinations of bulk sub recipes. I have read that they naturally grow on humus soils so I am going to try:
Some material from of my wife's organic compost pile Feild composted horse manure Coir Verm Gypsum Black Kow
I plan on trying many different combinations just to see.
I will also continue to test my clones as well probably on BRF cake material while I find a good sub.
Anyway, it's been a fun species to work with so far just slow as hell.

Ah I see you already said that above, I was confused. So you broke it up and cased it? It seems it worked quite well!

Very nice.
I hear that they like straw too.

I did not break them up. I made up the BRF and sterilized in in the pp5 containers and nocked up with LI from an MS agar wedge via the good old blender tek. Then cased with pasteurized 50/50+ after they were fully colonized. Yes it surprisingly did ok but I have seen better grows online than what I have done. But I did completly neglect them for about 12 days total. So I am surprised they even fruited at all. I was expecting tric city when I came home from being away for so long. Here is the horrible first flush:

LotKid, thanks for the advice. I thought about incorporating some straw as well. I probably will. I usually just use straw for oysters but I may have to throw some in there.

That first flush looks like more than enough for a good time... super jealous. Do these require a casing layer?

Did you see saralove's? She said she did them on simple straw and compost. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24391016#24391016

I recently had someone kick me some that I wasn't expecting. It was pretty cool of them. Haven't been able to start playing with them yet tho.

I just got 12 wild prints of this specie all the way from Australia in the mail today. Sara throws some "green" composted materials in all her grows. I like that idea. I think it makes sense to use a manure/straw/compost susbtrate seeng has how these things grow on wombat dung in the wild, and wombats eat bark, roots, and grasses.

Yes I saw her grow. They were some beautiful specimens and a damn great grow from her. She is quite a talented photographer as well.
mushpunx, shoot me a pm if you want some spores, as soon as get some anyway. The first flush, I harvested a little early it appears and didn't get one print.
LotKid, you will like them I think once you start working with um. An awesome buddy and member here very generously sent me some prints. They are actually very easy to grow. They are very comparable to cubes in their speed in vegetative growth. But once fruiting is initiated, everything seems to go in slow motion. Expect 3 weeks minimum until the first pins appear (at least that was my experience) and then they grow SO slow. I haven't tried any yet, but have heard they are quite potent. Perhaps more so than pans (my go to active). I don't know, I hope I can give um a try soon.
They are also very meaty, not hollow at all.
Thanks again for all of the kind words.

Yea, you have to leech the crap (no pun intended) out of some black Kow manure before it's viable to bring near a mushroom culture.

Yeah she uses compost from a pile in her garden. She does some serious exotic work. A manure/straw/compost sub was my plan for when I can get mine going. I just hope I can get the spores to germ, I think the print I got might be a couple years old. Once I order some more plates I'll find out.
So peacefrog, looks like a few of us agree on throwing some straw into the mix.
The fact that their grow parameters are similar to cubes really caught my attention. As far as their speed, all my recent work has been PE so I'm used to fruiting taking a lil longer.

They are very strong though IME. I don't eat them anymore, but from a long time ago I say as strong as Psilocybe semilanceata. So err on the side caution.
