EZ Straw "With Tack"?
    #24496313 - 07/20/17 01:08 PM (6 years, 6 months ago)

So I got some straw to do a few Panaeleous grows with. This time of year its hard to get bales of straw without leaving the city, I found these big bags of straw for mulch at Lowes for 8$.
Its already shredded, into pretty small pieces actually 2" or less for the most part I'd say.

I know people who have used EZ straw. But I didn't notice the "With Tack" until I got home.
It says it has a bonding agent that gives it a tackiness to hold it together some so wind or a heavy rain doesn't wash it away.

Anyone think that'll be a problem or had experience with this stuff?
I'm gunna give it a rinse before I soak it, make use a little extra dish soap in the soak as a surfucant

Thx

Edit: I just gave a few big handfulls a little soak and it feels normal, just like chopped straw. I dunno I think it'll do fine , maybe give it an extra couple rinses

You're right about that. I'm curious to see how it works. Never tried EZ because of the tack.

I hope so, I'll give it a couple rinses and some extra dish soap in the soak. Dish soap is a surfucant, it takes off the waxy coating from the outside of the straw and let's it absorb water

I've bucket tekked this stuff with oysters. Not as cheap as a bale obviously, but it's convenient and works well. I left quite a lot of it in the bucket for a month and it didn't appear contaminated.

It is a bit sticky though. Curious if your soap idea would work. Lately I've been wondering if it would be a good substitute for coir in cube grows... You get quite a lot of it for $10 or w/e.

I just purchased some ez straw with tack and didn't notice the tack element until the packaged shipped. I'm curious how yours turned out? Should I return it?

Man,this was a few years ago, I can't really remember. I think  I was using it for straw bottles and it was a sticky mess.

I was attracted to it because it was pre shredded but I think the tack made it too hard to work with. What are you using straw to grow?
Get a straw bale from a farm instead . They're like 5$. Just make sure it's been kept dry

Hey, Mushpunx.

PLEASE READ THIS AND GET BACK TO ME BECAUSE THIS IS IMPORTANT.
I DO BELIEVE THERE IS A POTENTIAL DANGER TO GROWING MUSHROOMS ON STRAW WITH TACK.

I'm a real person.
I'm not asking for money or anything from you.
I'm willing to give you my contact information if necessary.

I want you know that I do have an understanding of chemistry and biology.  I am a scientist and a professor at a University in the Southeast United States.  My PhD is in Bioengineering and I have undergraduate degrees in chemistry and electronics.

If you're impatient like me (and I am) you'll want me to get to the point quickly.  So, here it is.

****************************************************************************
I believe it is entirely possible that Mushrooms can AND WILL absorb and decompose the TACK into a acrylamide.  While acrylamide is safe for mushrooms, for humans it is a neurotoxin.

As such, I believe it's entirely possible that if one eats mushrooms grown on straw with tack they may be consuming small quantities of acrylamide.  The quantity would be very low in each mushroom.
*****************************************************************************

Now, to put things into perspective.  Tack is actually Poly-acrylamide.  I don't know how much you know about chemistry, but essentially Tack is a large molecule made out of Acrylamide.

Now, if you connect a bunch of Acrylamide molecules together, over and over and over..... You have Polyacrylamide.  THAT is what is put on the straw...

Now, Mushrooms are a group of organisms known as Decomposers.  That's really their whole purpose in the cosmic scheme of things.  They decompose 'stuff.'  They decompose dead animals, animal waste, dead plants, sometimes live plants, etc....

Decomposing stuff is how Mushrooms eat.  They make physical contact with whatever and then use enzymes to cause the 'stuff' to breakdown at a molecular level...

Mushrooms can AND DO decompose polyacrylamide.  So, the idea that the mushroom can take tack and break it down into acrylamide and store it within themselves is not only possible but also very logical and probable.  In fact, there has been at least one article published on the subject.

HOWEVER, will they retain high enough concentrations of Acrylamide to cause any real or significant damage???  I don't know...

I do know Acrylamide has been found to be a neurotoxin AND a mutagen.  Acryamide has been shown to cause point mutations in DNA which lead to cancer...

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....
Is it dangerous?  POSSIBLY.

DO I have proof?  No.  But I might be able to find some research that has been done and learn more about this...

Do I think you'll die or get immediately sick if you eat a few mushrooms grown on straw with Tack?    No... But I think if, for years, you ate mushrooms grown on tack there could be an affect.  It might lead to neuropathy or cancer...  (This is just POSSIBLE...  I don't have enough information yet for a reasonable conclusion.)

However, bottom line... I think it's good that you soaked the straw and removed some of the tack.

I do think that, in the future, when you grow mushrooms, it would be best to avoid using straw with tack...

I hope this helps...

Does a potato convert into polyacrylamide when baked? I thought i read somewhere that is true. And if it is, how much of that is already in our diet?

Arent they used as water crystals for growing certain things? I think someone posted a grow with a casing made of water crystals not long ago.

Doc T, this is interesting, thank you for the information.

This thread is about 3 years old. I gave this stuff a try but never grew on it because it was a sticky mess.

Someone recently posted a question on this EZ straw though so it's good to know
