Does anyone have an idea of how I could cook some french fries on a campfire?

Normally I don't fry my french fries (deepfrying=ick) I bake them in the oven.

I was thinking of trying to wrap them in tinfoil to cook them, think that would work?

dutch oven would be best

but I suppose one could get away with foil

This is the best I could find.


Baked Shoestring Potatoes

Meals can be cooked with aluminum foil packets.

Serves: 4

Cooking Time: 1 Hour

4 medium baking potatoes
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup grated cheese
1/4 cup milk
Dash of pepper

Cut a 48-inch length of aluminum foil and fold in half. Scrub or peel potatoes; cut them into thin length-wise strips as for French fries and place just off center on the foil.

Dot each with butter; sprinkle with salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons cheese. Pull edges of foil upward, then pour 1 tablespoon milk over the potatoes.

Make foil into a packet. Cook over glowing coals, about 1 hour or until done.

If desired, fold back edges of foil and sprinkle potatoes with extra cheese.

yep we wrap spuds in foil and bury them under ashes for 15-30 minutes,whole chicken is beautiful this way aswell.i don't know how french fries will do though

Well they don't have to turn out that crispy...as they're going to be doused in gravy and melted cheese anyway :smirk:

It's easy:

Make some french fries, enough to fit in a bowl. Make them however you want, deepfried or baked (I usually bake mine).

Also heat up some gravy. Hotter is better, as it will melt the cheese and make the whole thing nice and goopy.

Put the fries in the bowl.

Sprinkle some fresh cheddar cheese kurds on top of the fries.

Now pour some gravy over the whole thing.

Wait a couple minutes for the cheese to melt, and you're set!

Well what's your version, then? This is how I've always made them, and how I've always seen them made. Some places cheap out on the cheddar kurds and use regular grated mozarella but it's just not the same...

Few people actually eat real poutines.. A real poutine doesn't use regular gravy, it uses poutine gravy. The taste is very different. A real poutine doesn't use cheddar, or mozzerella. It uses kingsey cheese curds... When everyone started making poutines they fucked it up badly.. I don't even want to talk about the "poutine" they sell at most fast food places... the only restaurant that sells decent poutine is Valentines. They're all over quebec, and they've got it pretty damned close. Next time you're over here, you oughta check em out. :thumbup:

RECIPE:

Purists may insist that poutine is best sampled from a chip wagon and served in a styrofoam bowl, but home cooks will find the Quebecois culinary classic easy to make.

Curds can be found at cheese shops and some supermarkets, and their freshness is essential -- they make the poutine "squeak." Canned St. Hubert brand barbecue-style gravy is available at Dominion ($1.39/398 ml). Simply deep-fry a mess of french fries, place them in a large bowl with as many cheese curds as you dare and cover with heated gravy. Let everything sit for a few minutes until the cheese melts, et voila, poutine!


Origins of Poutine


Restaurateur Ferdinand Lachance invented poutine over 4 decades ago. His idea for poutine was part customer request, part cooking experiment, and now pure folklore.

In 1953, Lachance bought his first restaurant, Caf? Ideal, in Warwick, Quebec, an hour's drive northeast of Montreal. Inside, patrons could play a game of pool, buy some penny candy for the kids, and even get a haircut.

"It was practically the rule," Lachance says, who's since hung up his apron and now enjoys retirement. "If you had a barbershop, you had a restaurant, too. It brought in customers."

Great Places for Poutine

The poutine legend goes that one day a young patron placed an order for French fries topped with some cheese. Lachance was dumbfounded.

"But it will be a maudite poutine," Lachance replied, which politely translated into "a damn mishmash." But Lachance complied. He served the young man a cupful of hot French fries and soft curd cheese. The addition of brown gravy was still a few years away. So there it was, the messy, melting, maudite humble beginnings of poutine.

Eventually, Lachance renovated his restaurant and renamed it Le Lutin Qui Rit, which translates into "the laughing elf." With the grand reopening of the restaurant in 1957, Lachance wanted to offer a dish unique to the establishment. Since the odd concoction of French fries and cheese curds proved to be not so odd after all, his wife suggested a way to improve the dish by adding some gravy. But not just any gravy. She created a m?lange of brown gravy, tangy barbecue sauce (quite new at the time), and a hint of ketchup to pour over the French fries and cheese.

mmmm poutine im so hungry.

in tin foil might as well just make soem baked patato maybe. butter cut up patatos onion salt pepper. toss that in teh tin foil . mmmm thats the best

just take teh fries and put a little oil in a frying pan and just do it like that.heat up teh pan on the fire. prob need a grill on it and need a glove forsure.
