What madhatter said, just put a lid from a somewhat smaller tote on the sub and turn it around, then fruit upside down. Done it quite a few times, works fine. As for the poly being a little finicky bitch, have you tried covering the holes with a layer of MP tape? If it's still keeping humidity too high after, poke a bunch of holes in it with a needle?

For now tighten up that polyfill.

That does sound nice. My significant other is only interested for a minute and a half before she's back on her phone

I confess that after the most careful preparation of my clean room and SB ever, as i started to unwrap my sterilized tweezers and scalpel to begin transfers an earwig fell out and started to crawl around the still air box, I tried to catch it but it hid in the moist paper towels lining the bottom, I sprayed the chamber with alcohol to kill it and dug it out later.

I confess, I've only been able to grow trich on my pasty plates...besides the first plates I made In april(which were successful) all I've grown is trick. I'm gonna start my own thread called "mycologists learn from failure".

Mushroom therapy I feel like you've just been having a rough time all around man. Did that grain prep end up working out for ya?
Also how are you inoculating your plates?

I would have cried. I have an irrational fear of insects, especially ones with pincers.

Yesss ))): this is not how I thought the summer would turn out. The grain turned out alright, per suggestions from fellow shroomites I didn't didn't g2g with my two masters and made shoeboxes instead. But I did transfer a little bit of the grain into one of the jars, growth was looking strong and I shook today. I wipe the lids down with alcohol then pre open the lids a little so I don't have struggle with it once I have the syrninge in hand then do one or two drops onto the agar.

It was a period of controlled panic, I never have emotional outbursts when my hands are in a SAB (learned the hard way) I did not want it crawling around my SAB, I did not want to make sudden air moving, movements or get angry at it (hulking out in SAB is not a good combo), I have no fear of insects but I always disliked earwigs and I especially dislike having the illusion of hygienic technique control destroyed in a moment. I merely closed my pasty plates and sprayed the paper towel with alcohol and continued working. I also have had an ant before in a petri dish when I was in a government laboratory in the amazon (stretch wrapped and everything), are they rally that strong? How do they get in?

I think you may be drawing air into your Petri containers through something other that filter material during the cool down in your PC. Have you tried a no pour Tek that uses 8 one wide mouth, and, or 8 ounce squat wide mouth jars as agar media vessels? All you do is use grain jar lids for them. This gives you the option of employing self healing injection ports, and NOT having to open the lids to your agar vessels for inoculation. I have about 100 of the high quality, large, red injection ports laying around that aren't being used. I'd be willing to slide you about 20 if you think this suggestion would help.

Buy a 12 pack and split it with me and I'll give you 10 blank petri dishes I poured past week
I tried no pour with glad mini rounds and wasn't a fan, got right into pouring presterilized dishes, haven't had a single one contaminate based on the condition before opening the package. Got a couple broken ones awhile back but not a big deal

In another thread he said that his first round of inoculations went smooth. I think he may have infected his syringe by cross contamination as he was putting it away to store, or the syringe got infected in strorage. I'd get new spores, and check the sterilie Tek, plus proper ways to store a spore syringe.

and the syringe is different, that first succesfull inoculation was months ago. The syringe I used for these plates was opened for the first time moments before inoculation.

Ok tell us what you're learning. Confess some of the mistakes you have learned about or suspect making... We have already discussed how keeping tubs full of trich spores around your place will launch millions of spores into the air waiting to settle on countertops and shelves and then get stired up when you walk past with the Pasty plates you're going to inoculate...
In addition to cleaning well and taking those tubs outside... what else are you learning and improving on your sterile technique? Keep trying you'll get there...
