What are the troops going through?
    #2447911 - 03/18/04 05:46 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

A lady whom I work with went over to Iraq this month "to make some extra money". She was e-mailing a co-worker as the hotel(?) bomb went off in Bagdad last night. She said that she heard a loud explosion and that the building shook.

One of the shitty things that i've heard about Iraq war life from her is that she shares a bathroom with 10 other woman(she was told "3 or 4") and that they can't flush toilet paper because the sewer lines are too thin! So they have a trashcan for it. That's fucking sick.

I know some of you guys know people over there. What kinds of shitty things are they going through that you don't normally hear about on the news?

I'm sure there is worse going on than the lack of the ability to flush paper down toilets. I heard that some people don't even have daily access to hot showers

I also heard some soldiers have to sleep in the same room as other men

I have been putting used toilet paper in the trash can for sixteen years now. It drives my mother nuts whenever I visit her in Canada.

Where I live, there is no sewer system. We all have septic tanks instead. Septic tanks get clogged rapidly if you flush toilet paper into them. Since most people really REALLY dislike the smell from overflowing septic tanks, most people learn pretty quickly not to flush anything down a toilet that hasn't passed through a human body first.

My folks have a septic tank at their house that has been running for 30 years with no trouble. I've never heard of people putting used toilet paper in a wastebasket except in the case of composting toilets that have to be pumped out every 6 months.

A septic system should dissolve the paper, much like mushroom mycelia dissolves straw. Just like putting newspaper into your compost pile deteroriates. IF you dislke the smell of sewage, what do you think of the smell of shit caked to your toilet paper in your trash can as it dries and cakes up?

Maybe it should, but the ones here don't. Could be that they are built too small for the volume of water dumped into them, could be that the fact we are on sand rather than earth changes things. I dunno. All I know is that the one time I helped my employees drain and scrape the septic tank (yes, we got right down inside the tank and dug out the top foot and a half of caked crud from the bottom of the pit) the entire bottom was packed solid with toilet paper (and quite a few condoms) that my tourist guests too lazy to read the instructions had helpfully flushed down the johns.

A friend of mine runs a septic cleaning service here (damn good business to get into here, by the way -- the guy is definitely not poor) and he says it is the same with ALL the hotel, bar, and restaurant tanks here. The paper gets deposited faster than it can be dissolved. He has admitted to sneaking into the washrooms of these establishments and taking the "no paper in toilet" signs in six languages off the walls of the toilet stalls.

Filthy capitalist bastard.

I've been getting something called the Baghdad Rag from one
of my uncle's coworkers who's a colonel or something.

I've been contemplating posting them, but I wouldn't want it
coming back around somehow...

PM me if you'd like me to forward to an email addy for you.

I think there's about 6 installments that he's written thus far.

It's pretty interesting reading about the day to day shit...
