Have any of you tried pressure cooking your oats just to hydrate them? Is there a reason why you shouldn't? The reason I ask is due to pressure cooking pinto beans, mother does the four hour hard boil, grandmother used to pressure cook for an hour, boiling hard removed the outer portion of the pintos somewhat and made the soup thicker and delicious, whereas pc pintos would just look plump and the water would be near clear. Remedied by smashing half cup and adding back, hard boil for few minutes, so quick pintos...

As for oats, I just tried Bod's easy af oat prep with 1.5 cup whole recleaned oats, at same time I pressure cooked another 1.5 cups for 15 minutes, 10 min heat up, 15 pc at 15 minutes, 10 min cooldown to depressurize and take a look. (Trying to find the time for pc'ing oats to hydrate them) They were more plump, softer than 30 min boil with less burst grains, however, cleaned both before starting, (rinsed) and the pc batch water was dark, 30 min boil broth was near clear. Im , just f'ing around waiting on agar to arrive tomorrow, had 50 lbs thought I'd find out for myself.

I got four ms syringes, have used most of one to noc 10 half pint jars 2 days ago, first batch was real wet before brf, 1 cup water seemed like way to much, so I drained before, added brf and ended up having to add some more water before pc'ing, second 5 jar batch just added it all together like it says(new updated pf tek ) 2 cups verm, 1 cup water, 1 cup brf. the second one has larger pockets and some condensation, the first batch looks like smaller pieces and a more dry mix.

Was wondering if I should use the last of my 1st syringe to noc up these 2 experimental noob jars and see if my sab technique is up to par. Would like to say sporeworks treated me very well, had a 50 gift card and he gave me more than that.

Thanks to everyone, I studied botant and the woods have always called me, especially the Fifth Kingdom.

I found getting oats hard too. If in Canada, peavey mart has them. I had to call around to places that came up as "feed store" and even contacted the manufacturer to find out where they sold what i was looking for.

In the end, i feel getting the right oats was critical.

Following this method, i had no problems making a -lot- of jars, and it's been 8 days since inoculation and every jar is just rocking it and looking ultra-clean and colonization is super-fast.

Clean oats with hulls on, boiled until maybe 5-10 grains had popped, put into colanders and shaken to dry, left tout for about an hour, rolled on paper towel quick to check for barely any wet spots, jarred them and pc'd for 2 hours, cooled overnight and injected with ms syringes I made myself from prints the following day.

It's astonishing how well this tek works if you follow the instructions and keep a small amount of wiggle room to adjust for personal circumstances.

Eg: I used exactly 15 cups of oats to make 10 jars
Gave me exactly 3 cups per jar of wet oats

Used a modified funnel cut wide at the bottom to pour exact amount of oats into each jar.

This worked perfectly for the type of oats i have.

I also noted the exact temperature of the stove and got my times down to an art. It's possible with this method to set an entire schedule for a day and get 30 jars done in 10hrs flat using a 75$ pressure cooker from costco and a 15$ giant aluminum pot from walmart.

For 30$ of jars, 10$ in sfd's, 5$ tube of silicon, 85$ in pots and pans, and 10$ in oats and 10$ in misc supplies... One could spend 150$ and two weekend days to have 36 jars ready to go.

That's Canadian dollars, costs 4$ per jar to make a fully modified sfd lid jar, fill it, PC it, everything.

Cost another 40$ to get agar plates done up and 20$ for a spore print.. 6 tubs for 150$..
Realistically, using bods methods, a person could have 6 tubs going for like 400$.

This tek is fantastic. I'm just new myself and followed this as wisdom but not an absolute rule, and my jars are looking beautiful and healthy off of the dreaded ms spore syringe noc. (my agar plates are beautiful too after two weeks, and the transferred to plates look just as pretty.)

Thanks man, pressure cooking is so much faster, I will try 20 mins next time, keep going until it looks like too many burst. Side note, if you take a chuck roast, fry the shit out of both sides of it on high heat til its dark, deglaze pan, then cut up in big chunks, add to pc with soy, worcestershire, onions and garlic, then water, you can make some evil hot roast beef plates with creamed cheese mashed potatoes

Got some shit done today, 2 quarts oats hydrated, 1 pc, 1 boil, 13 metal lids and 7 plastic. Prime Numbers! I could noc these today but, wanted to wait on my 23 coming tomorrow, would have to lay them on their side. Wanted to wait to try that after I've done a few. Used a 36 by 24 inch metal window screen to lay the oats on after resting them in the colander. When I prepped the lids I did the top first, patted with a very wet paper towel to push down, then did the underside which pushes a neat little protrusion up which is handy. 3/8 forstner on the breathers, 1/4 inch on the nocs. Will it be ok to refrigerate these 2 quarts tonight while my lids set and pc them tomorrow? I have a lid on loose

If I adjusted proportions could I use pint jars instead of quart jars?

Probably a stupid question but still doesn't hurt (too much) to ask

Figured i would make a ~ton~ of jars, just because i was expecting a lot of them to screw up..

8 days later.... 72/72 jars are looking splendid. i shook jars vigorously at 15% colonized.

so this is my little area to learn the hobby in.

i started with 2 varieties, and figured i would make some mistakes along the way, so i figured why not commit to the hobby to learn.

everything you see was based on things i learned right here on the board. i have a couple more new pictures in my gallery as well.

MS Syringes i made myself off a print from a shroomery sponsor.

pics are of b+

9 days passed on b+

20  jars are ~75-80% colonized
16  jars are ~15-20% colonized

8 days passed on GT

36/36 GT jars are ~30-40%
going to shake them all today.

Nice looking set up. If your willing to invest that much into this hobby you should have gotten into agar first. Bod has a really nice write up as well as some other experienced members on the subject.  It will dramatically increase your yeild and success rate. Keep us posted

i've got agar going as well.

doing parallel runs, so that when i harvest tub the batch, the agar culture will be going into the emptied jars.
underlined is where i'm at with both..

run 1
(identical for b+ and GT)

1 Print > 10 syringes >  jars > Unbodded tub > clone > agar > agar > grain > grain > grain> loopback to tub

run 2
Print > syringe > agar > agar > agar > grain > grain > grain > tub

going to make use of this oat tek for some pint jars as experiments with LC, myc water, etc..

anyway..
fingers crossed, 72/72 clean jars now
hopefully some gorgeous tubs later.
i want to prove to the world that if you actually research and listen to the advice here
even a first time grower can do well.

=)

i don't wnat to hijack this thread, i'll post a link to my grow in my sig later today.
check gallery for more pics.

Bod would you use these or pitch them? I think they cooked a little long. I definitely dried them enough but I ran them for about 38 minutes or so at a boil. They looked fine going into the PC but today they look kinda wet
