240v AA 75x Electric Sterilizer help please.
    #24474239 - 07/11/17 03:50 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I recently picked up an AA 75x electric sterilizer for a steal at $100.
I was told the over-pressure vent didn't work so the unit would have to be shut off manually.
...--- that sounds like a thermostat/thermoswitch issue to me? (but admittedly idk much about electronics or wiring)
It does need a new geared steam gauge, and a top handle for sure. I don't know the condition of anything else.

However, the most immediate obstacle is that this big bertha is a 240v 50/60hz, and I live in the US. Until I can get it powered up, idk what's wrong it.

Suggested options:
- step up/step down transformer with universal output plug(s).
- replace the 75x power supply plug with a US220v plug.
- replace all electrical components with the US110v model parts ($$$pricey$$$).

Anyone out there have any safe electrical advice/experience/input on what I should try?

All American sells replacement parts and I would suggest getting any part through them. As far as your electrical issue you can buy plug in transformers but you need to find out how many Amps it will be pulling and make sure your electrical breaker can support. If it's 50/60hz you'll be fine using it in the US

Thank you Explicitdetail.
It pulls 6.88amps at 240v (1650watts)

If I would use a transformer plugged into 120v, my current draw is going to roughly double (to approx 14amps), correct?

To turn the thing into the 120v version, I think all I need is the heating element and the wiring harness.
  - the toggle switch and thermoswitch are the same part for 120v and 240v.

However, the pilot light (power indicator light) and control box are dif part numbers for the 240v as opposed to the 120v versions.
-pilot light is approx $15 and the control box is a approx $115.

Seems I might be able to get by without a new control box?

I'm still unsure on which route I'll take. Any more suggestions or pros vs cons of dif ways to get it going?

FYI, I'm going to replace all parts on the lid just to be sure

So it sounds like this is already 220v which means your cheapest option would be to just get a 110 to 220 converter. The amperage is already rated for 220 so getting a converter won't change that, however changing the power supply to 110 will double the amps. My suggestion would be get only the parts you know you need at this time and see if it works in the first place. You can get a converter pretty cheap online just make sure its fuses are at least 10amps on the 220 side.

Did the previous owner drop the thing off a cliff before selling it to you?  Be careful man, a new 75x is expensive, but is nothing compared to recovering from a house fire.  Good luck.

Edit:  - Also important to point out, the police tend to show up at the scene of a fire in addition to the fire department if you catch my drift.

Okay so after re-reading this I'm going to change my advice. If this is a 240v 50hz power supply its single phase which will not work well in the US even with a converter. I doubt a fire will engulf your house but more than likely you'll end up replacing more parts in the end. The Power (p) will stay the same at 1650 which means your current (i) will double when you go from 240-110 volts (v).  P= i x v. A converter of that size will also cost you upwards for $80-100 so based off your prices for upgrading the power supply it seems better in all aspects.

An electrician/boiler maker friend of mine (it is such a blessing to have a friend with expertise and certification like that, in this hobby!!!) wired me up an adapter cord.
Hooked me up a female end that matches the aa75x, and wired it to a 220 dryer (male) plug in.

Within seconds, tiny bubbles start pouring off the element. This thing heats up fast! :-)
No transformer needed, didn't have to change a thing to the original 75x, which I was concerned about.

Btw, it is 50/60hz. I believe I said that in the o.p. Thank you all for your input!!!
