I feel a lot better now. I went for a long walk on the river walk and hand fed some geese. Wild geese get such a bad rap but are actually pretty awesome. I spent some time thinking about what I needed to do with my project next. I looked at my jars and they can easily wait another day. I decided it's more important to have more than 4 jars ready. I bought two more packs of half pint jars, some tapioca starch, molasses, a giant colander and a 1 liter pyrex measuring cup. Figured I'd spoil myself today. I'm hoping I can get a more homogeneous agar and not have the bitchiness caused by the potato flakes.

Haha no worries, I grew up amongst surf culture so I call everyone dude as a habit. I'm also in a different situation than most of the regular posters here (as far as I can tell) because I am growing such a small amount. If I were doing tubs and tubs I'd be a lot more cautious.

Dude everything is gross. That's why you wash your hands before you touch anything else or use wipes. If you let your cat outside it comes home pretty gross. I also guarantee you that public transportation is much nastier and contains more pathogens you can catch. But now I know how to gross you out. totally going to make more bird touching videos and send them to you.

So I just made my agar. Used tapioca starch and molasses. I'm slightly worried I used too much molasses and too little starch. Put a few tablespoons of starch in one liter of agar. Also put about a few tablespoons of molasses by accident. Never measure directly over your pot. It's one of those things you know not to do but do anyways cause it seems easier. Sigh. I made way too much agar for just ten jars. Next time I'll make a half a liter. Damn this agar shit is hard.

How many grams of agar did you use?? Should be only about 20 grams per liter what made you wanna use those ingredients? And i make a liter every time pour into a qt and save for next time if you have 10 plates you should use it within 2 weeks

Don't worry I know the 20g of agar to 1 liter of water ratio at the very least.
I was curious. I know they put it in spore slurries. Wanted to see what would happen if I made agar with it. I wanted the tapioca starch because it would make a more clear agar than potato flakes. It totally worked. I made sure to get the good molasses that wasn't black strap and full of sodium. Also I thought this was pretty interesting as well as some other things I read about molasses.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17257250
I did it for science or something like that.

True confessions....
I lease the upstairs 3 rooms of my house... I waited 2 to 3 years to post solid pics that are just for show... just because I have 6 monos at a time going does not mean i'm doing well..... I try my best...
One of my fucking roommates, NOT ONLY opened my fucking give away PE swab...... THEY LEFT THE FUCKING BAG INSIDE THE LETTER WITH NO NAME OPEN FOR 3 FUCKIN DAYS IN THE WRONG MAIL PILE!!!!!!!!!
I am very angry... I trusted this person to deliver a solid clone that I could work agar with..... He did.. I could see the spores on it...
These kids do not know... they know I go to a prominent university for biology and micoligy in the area... I am responsible for the rent at the end of the day....
Yet they felt the need to open my fucking letter and leave my swab exposed to open air for 3 fucking days in there room.....
Guess who isnt getting an up on there sub let in 20 days... Im FUCKING PISSED!! Have some goddamn respect!!!!! no name means don't fucking open it! if you do! don't fucking open the next bag!!! fsadjklfjklfsdjklfsd;jklfjksdlfjkslsfjkl
(excuse my spelling I am hasty and upset from this realization... I cannot confront them until tomorrow and they are moving out in the next week..)
Im just very disappointed!!!

Awwwe growlingmycelium. Sorry that happened. I usually send people my first name and first letter of my last name because I live in a 3 floor house. My roommates are pretty respectful of my mail except for occasionally tossing my packages down the stairs. I have a feeling it's just my cat knocking them down off the side though. She likes to rub all over new stuff.
Here is a slice of the agar I scooped out of the measuring cup so you could see the varying translucency based on the thickness. I like how well light passes through it. Nice huh.

Well lets see how this formula works out. I am putting some on the PDA glass dishes I have and some on this new formula and I want to see which ones grow out better. I read molasses is supposed to be very good for mycelium growth. I've been doing a lot of reading lately. Can you tell? Weird thing is I hate reading but it keeps me busy while I'm pressure cooking which takes forever on the burner or waiting for mycelium to grow out.

Actually molasses has minerals mushrooms need. Too lazy to get up and read the jar but I think there's at least potassium, calcium, iron and magnesium if I am correct. It's definitely more nutritional than kayro. I'm not sure if those are good for mushrooms or not. It's a by product of cane sugar production.
