Colinizing and Casing
    #2447143 - 03/18/04 02:50 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Alright ive got a couple questions here.
First ive got 12 jars sitting in the dark colonizing, 4 of them are colinizing very quickly, 4 are pretty much on schedule and then 4 of them have just very small patches at the 4 inoculation sites. I was just wondering why this would happen and what i did to make these other jars go so slow on not keep up with the other ones. (Today is the 12th day after inoculation.)
Second i was wondering if there was actually a point where if i were to put too much substrate in a pan would it decrease the yield of my shrooms because the subtrate is too deep?
Third i was wondering what are some good sterile casing practices. I want to make sure i keep this process as sterile as possible and i was just wondering what were some good steps or precautions to take to do this.
Anything helps... thanks everyone.

Packing the substrate into the jars to tight can cause slow colonization. Try to leave it a little loose, not to much though. Some of the jars could have been packed a little tighter than the others.

Contams/bacteria can cause slow growth also.

Are they all being being kept at 80*-85*F through colonization?

They say that 6 inches of substrate is the max you want to use but I wouldn't go over 4 inches with no more than 3/4 inch's of casing, this is my thoughts!  Good Luck!

well my house is probably around 72 degrees id say and they are in a trunk at room temperature unless it gets warmer in there or something. Also there are no signs of contamination yet on any jars but can slow colinization mean that there is a good chance of a contaminated jar?

At 72*, that might be the reason. Dont get peranoid! Most likely some other factor!
