Britney lip synches, American Idol people are just covers, and I can't really think of any more mainstream people since I haven't watched MTV in over a year.
I agree but I was really talking about mainstrem rock/rap. It is undeniable that the Spears' of the world are only there for their look. If Britney gained 30 LBS she would have no more career. I was watching American Idol about a month or so ago (yeah I watched it at the beginning (mainly for those that couldn't sing)) and Simon said that she didn't have the look but could sing. But just after that he said that it was a singing competition and you should be able to sing. WTF?

Of the mainstream, top 40, artists, I only respect one: John Mayer. He writes his own songs, and if you seen Chappelle's
I seen him on the Chappell show, very funny. I don't care what kind of music people play as long as somone in the group writes and they play an instrument.

Slayer WAS mainstrem in the Heavy Metal genre but I really wouldn't call them mainstream in "regular" circles of music listeners.

you're right. There seems to be a stigma attached to success that I haven't been able to understand. The more popular you get the more people say you sold out. It's a double edged sword and is the point of this thread, nice job.

This is what I found. There is no doubt that Phish is doing good things but they DO NOT give all of their live show money to charity. (even though this has absolutly nothing to do with the topic being discussed) THE WATERWHEEL FOUNDATION Phish set up the Waterwheel Foundation in 1997 to oversee the band's charitable activities. The Waterwheel Foundation works on a few different fronts: the Lake Champlain clean up, the touring program, and the giving program.Lake Champlain stretches more than one hundred miles from Vermont's Green Mountains to the Adirondacks of New York. The lake is plagued with pollution problems and the Waterwheel Foundation has donated $118,000 to various environmental groups committed to cleaning it up. The proceeds from every sale of Ben and Jerry's Phish Food flavor is donated to the clean up.The touring program allows non-profit organizations to set-up information booths and raise funds at Phish shows in each city Phish plays. Organizations like Rock the Vote and the Phellowship (an organization of clean and sober phans) benefit from the touring front of the Waterwheel foundation and the touring division has donated $77,000 to more than 70 charities. The giving program oversees Phish's involvement in benefit concerts like Farm Aid and the Bridge School Benefit, as well as grants to aid charitable organizations and arts programs in Vermont. Learn more about the Waterwheel Foundation at www.phish.com.Phish phans have also organized the Mocking Bird Foundation (www.mockingbirdfoundation.org) to raise money for various charities. The Mocking Bird Foundation has raised funds through the sale of "The Phish Companion," a 928-page guide to the music and overall spectacle of Phish, as well as "Sharing in the Groove" a Phish-tribute album that features Dave Matthews, Jimmy Buffet, the Tom Tom Club, Lake Trout, Little Feat and several others performing the music of Phish. The Mocking Bird Foundation has donated more than $170,000 to music education for children.

Other than 80's music, which was just so terrible is was wonderful, I can't think of any 'popular' music out there that I actively listen to. Most of the pop today is out there for dancing purposes. If you want to go clubbing, you don't hear Metallica or Tool or NIN playing because the dance floor would be a huge mosh pit instead of a huge orgy pit. You can't dry hump to the kind of music I like.
I enjoy listening to music that is more intricate, more emotional, more original, more inventive. And that kind of music isn't 'popular' right now. I don't really hate pop music....unless you stick Britany Spears in my face....I just don't respect it. Therefore, I don't listen to it.
A few bands and artists that I feel should be recognized for their incredible music: -Sigur Ros -System of a Down -Radiohead -Tool -NIN -Portishead -Sneaker Pimps -Filter -Bj?rk -Elliott Smith
Yup.

Good musicians draw on their life experiences to create their art. When they become megasuccessfull, it changes their lives, and consequently changes their art, usually not for the better.

I like to think of mainstream music as the shit on MTV, the shit on the radio, and most of the shit winning awards.
Now, not everything playing on the radio or television is crap, but I believe most of it is. Have you heard how many terrible covers are playing out there? And all American Idol is doing is reusing music. A lot of the time, it's really good music that's getting butchered by people who think they can sing. And I'm not talking about the auditions. I'm talking about the people they have on now, in the semi-finals or wherever they are.
I'm just sick of listening to 'artists' who don't write their own music. I'm just sooooooo siiiiiiiick oooooooof iiiiiiiit!!!!!!
Save me!

why? There are a lot of people that I don't like that listen to Metallica (my favorite) and it doesn't make me any less inclined to listen to them. Maybe it's just me then.

whether I like music or not has nothing to do with how popular it is. I really dont even know whats popular and what isnt anymore. I dont watch mtv or listen to the radio. I get all my music from the recommendations of friends who know me pretty well. some of the music I like is popular and some of it is unpopular. I really dont know which is which, all I know is I get funny looks from people when i play certain shit, and nods of approval when I play other shit. But I like it all.
As far as the whole "bands selling out" thing goes:
I think success and selling out are correlated but not necessarily causative. I think that the age of the musician has a lot to do with it, too. Mettalica got pissed about napster because they aint teenagers anymore. Theyre old men with families to feed and their hard and fast lifestyle hasnt left them with much else to give in the way of good music... so they're adamantly defending the shit they did in the past because its their main income... And its hard to rock if youre 35 or 40 and you have kids and shit- especially if you've been doing it for tht long and that hard.
I do have mad respect for successful musicians that realize they dont have any good music left in them and decide to retire before they sell out. Soundgarden is a good example. I was sad when they broke up, but the fact remains that they never released a bad albumn.
Also, some bands embrace the mainstream in order to shed light on the underground, like Nirvana. And I think that was pretty noble. I dont think of nirvana as sellouts. I didnt see them as people pushing a product, just people trying to get a message out.

I wouldn't call Mars Volta or Modest Mouse "mainstream," but I agree. There's plenty of good music out there that's popular.

This is why I like bands that have a trippy sound. That way, in order to maintain their sound, all they need to do is continue to use psychedelics, which is even easier to do when you're famous.
