Dark Life o000oo00o
    #2446164 - 03/18/04 06:27 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Down in the depths 9000 plus feet in the ocean, you find yourself in a alien world.
Humans dont belong here you think..pure darkness surounds you..your lite illuminates a "smoke stack" pouring out black sulphur dioxide rich fumes eatin up by microbes..who inturn
fed a ecosystem ..of other alien creatures.

Completely independend from the sun.  they eat rocks and water :wtf:
if you havent read up on dark life do it...absolutely fascinating stuff!

Many scientists suspect that life originated in the dark some 3.5 to 4 billion years ago..and really why wouldnt it?
the surface was being pelted by meteors.. covered with lava flows..siesmic activity..not to mention the posinous gases.

well if it started above or below, one thing is for sure.. dark life is abundant and thriving.
this lil bugs are down in the dirt like 8000 feet or something,
miles below antartica,  at the bottum of the oceans, living in water that is hot enough to boil.

What is really interesting is the possibilities of dark life evolving independent from earth.
could it evolve intelligence?
this may just be my field of future study.

relative biomass [Re: shaggy101]

the biomass of the kingdom monera (prokaryotes, like bacteria, archaebacters, & their allies) is greater than that of all other kingdoms (protists, fungi, plants, & animals) combined...

When life evolved on the surface, the predominant life sustaining gas in the atmosphere was C02 and O2 was a poison gas. The life forms so polluted the atmosphere that CO2 became trace and life forms evolved to exploit O2. We are not the first ones to flip the climate.

Christian DeDuve's "Vital Dust" is really terrific on this. He doesn't try to force points and gives a lot of information and informed speculation. A lot of cell biology. Big book and not for casual readers, but if you're serious you really must check it out.

How did the original lifeforms pollute the atmosphere?

The original life forms used CO2 for their reactions and emitted O2 as waste. Oxygen was poisonous to them just as CO2 is poisonous to us now. A rose bush is a weed in an onion patch.

Well we know more about the stars than we do of our own oceans, there are places down there where we have never explored or seen. They could easily still be giagantic scary dinosaurs thing down there.

Marine Biologists KNOW for a fact that Giant Squid truly exist and even have captured baby specimens but not for long; as they all die all too easilly in caputre.

Yet, we still can't catch one of those fuckers, alive.

Ya your thinking of Architeuthis, tis generally found in the 20 ft range..but weve found them up to 40 ft!

But there is suspicion of another squid, that may reach lenghths of 100+ft!! :nut:

course theres no evidence of that yet, but heh the ocean is 36,000 feet deep.

Yeah I saw a special on discovery I think, about searching for the gigantic squid. They attached a camera to a sperm whale (since sperm whales hunt squid) It's sooo insane! One of the coolest things I've seen on discovery. Sperm whales just dive bomb straight down through the ocean! Complete darkness, they rely on sound to coordinate their attacks and such. As they were going down and the water was getting darker, I was getting goosebumps. Complete silence. All you can see is a whale going straight down. I so wish the whales caught a squid, that would've been amazing. At one point they suddenly stopped to inspect the camera, heh.

It really is an alien world down there.

They also showed HUGE ass squid tenticles they've found either in fishing nets or washed up onto shore I believe?
