Agar Swabs, how many times can they be used?

Okay so I recently found out about spore swabs and I wanted to know how many agar dishes can be inoculated with one swab? I was thinking about two or three.
Should I dip it in water first? Can I cut the tip off and place the tip on an Agar dish?

Well, since i don't use them i can't offer any information from my personal experience however i did a little digging for you and for me as well and found that most people usually use a spore swab for one dish... you know.. from what i can see and the threads i've looked at but i'd wipe it around until it has no spores left on it. The only reason i can see with people putting it in water is to make a spore syringe and don't leave the tip in there, just stick with insert and ejaculate .

don't cut the tip and leave it in the dish..
scroll down to the spore germination section in this link to see how to use an inoculation loop https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21922023
ppl do print to agar with a loop with and without water on the dish. make sure your sterile technique is good if you use water. without it, it could take a week or more longer for the spores to hydrate off of the agar and then germinate on it

my dude im sorry i thought he was saying to swab from print to plate. if you have a print, use the inoculation loop or scalpel. if you only have a swab, then someone with experience with swabs should get in on this thread

Probably as many times as it makes myc ... i heard people usually only use a swab once on a few plates but you vould always store it and try again later ive only ever used swabs once myself

I have used an inoculation loop before and I meant cut the tip off AFTER swabbing and place it on a new dish to salvage any remaining spores.

ok so you are familiar with the loop but want to try this. me too now that we're talking about it... it seems like it would be a not so sterile way of doing things, bc there isn't an instrument to sterilize between dishes and it touches each dish. then again, its a ton of spores and is more simple than a syringe. i think Boogieman may have a point about using it a few times. why not? if you open and close packaging for it all inside the SAB, using it in multiple sessions, and anticipate a few transfers, then it seems like not a bad way of doing things. not speaking from experience on that part, just some theory of course it would get riskier with each plate and session, but there would still be plenty of vital spores on the swab after a dozen plates for sure. i'd likely start without adding water drops on the plate or swab and just make agar plates with a little less agar powder. more water in the agar can help with germinating dry spores without pools on the surface.

Obviously there is risk to it, it's on agar! Of course if it becomes infected the next thing to do is isolate any mycelium from it. That's not the issue, if it gets mold with mycelia that is to be expected as a possibility.
The question was how many dishes can be used and if there's any way to salvage the remaining bit. I'm going to try 2-3 and go from there, yes I have used a homemade inoculation loop.

I've been wondering the same thing and found this thread that seems helpful

If you have a flow hood and proper petris, I would think you could quite easily get 5-10 inoculated quickly and cleanly, but I don't know what the actual number of plates would be before you start getting negative returns (contam, lack of germination, etc).
