DIY Hotplate Idea
    #24372258 - 06/02/17 08:36 PM (6 years, 7 months ago)

I'm not an electronics expert. Wondering if I can just buy a replacement heating element for a stove, hook up a standard power cord to the appropriate ends (assuming it matters which) so that it powers the element when plugged in.

Get a temp controller dial involved, put it all in a fire safe housing and voila? Simple hot plate?

Idk the hotplates on amazon are not exactly doing it for me, I want to be able to PC somewhere thats not my kitchen so I don't have to explain to people who happen to drop by. Hopefully it can hold a 21 quart PC easily enough

Then I figure while I'm at it I'll add a timer so I can leave halfway through a PC run and be confident it will turn off.

Maybe but a hot plate and a replacement burner cost almost the same amount on amazon and at Wally world.

What are you trying to do with it?

Its in the OP...

None of the reasonably priced ones on the web have great reviews, and they all look smaller than standard heating elements.

And maybe this way I can get one with more wattage or something, heat shit up faster.

Yeah missed that sorry.  What about an induction cook-top?  If you has a stainless pressure cooker you could use that and set up some kind of digital light timer for it...

OP, I can't see why it wouldn't work, but you would need a little more setup than what you're thinking. I'm not the greatest with electronics either, but you're gonna need some way to regulate voltage/current into your heating element or you're gonna start a fire.

If you have somewhere outside, a propane burner (for a turkey fryer or something) is absolutely perfect.

They don't make SS cookers in the size we need (at least as far as I know) and it'd take FOREVER to heat up if they did, especially on an induction top. Not to mention that it'd be impossibly heavy to move once loaded and would cost a WHOLE lot.

Thanks thats something I wasn't aware of. Luckily I know a skilled electrician I can consult before I put anything together, they've simply been unreachable lately.

Might as well look into those propane deals though, DIY is fun and all but practicality/inexpensiveness are my priorities.

I've used hot plates for a pressure cooker, and while it does work it takes a lot longer to get up to temperature. The problem is that a hot plate works off standard 110v power, so you can just plug it into any standard wall outlet. But electric stoves work off of 220v power so they can heat up much faster and hotter than a hot plate.

Oh okay, thanks for that voltage tidbit.

Maybe a transformer or whatever it'd be to step up voltage

Propane baby. I use propane and forced air to get to pressure. Then back off to just propane and passive air to idle while holding at pressure.
They also make shut off timers for propane.

Here's a cheap, simple one.

Yeah, Id suggest a portable camp stove and a propane tank. Very portable, no electricity, heats up much better than electric cook tops.

I'm guessing that you want to use it indoors somewhere though?

If I was going to try sneaky PCing, I'd probably just buy an electric PC and do smaller batches instead of big loud ones with a traditional PC on a cook top of any kind.

Dont fuck around with making your own electric cook top from spare parts, especially if you don't know about electronics. You just have to look at the apartment fire in London yesterday to know that it's a terrible idea. You dont want to burn your place to the ground now do you :p

If u want a legit hot plate, u need a 240volt outlet. 120volt outlets (standard for house plugs for lamps and whatnot) just isnt powerful enough for a hot plate DIY electric stove.

Also making your own DIY stovetop sounds kinda dangerous. Be careful OP.
