I loved this part:
Quote:

"It is our business when a candidate for president claims the political endorsement of foreign leaders," Mr. Cheney said. "At the very least, we have a right to know what he is saying to foreign leaders that makes them so supportive of his candidacy."

This coming from the guy who refused to reveal what went on in his meetings with Enron.

Ok. I think it was a shady thing of him to do, but I have no illusions of John Kerry being some beacon of light. I just think he's a better candidate than Bush. My previous comment was just to point out the hypocrisy of Cheney criticizing Kerry for this when he did something similar, yet far more devious.

read the newspaper, dude, there's plenty of countries
out there overtly expressing their disdain for the
current administration and probably praying to high
hell that Kerry ousts dumb furor.

(and I don't mean north korea and iraq)

sure, but I'm more worried about president waffle's
9/11 commission testimony and cheney's energy
commission transcripts than some inflated campaign
claim that doesn't even deserve half the attention
it's gotten.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the idea of Congress being able to compel a president to reveal state secrets in open session.

The Cheney thing is, I believe, in the hands of the Supreme Court. I can also understand the desire to keep these conversations confidential in that if you don't there won't be any conversations. I know of your distrust of the oil industry but I think the V.P. should be able to ask the leaders of what is arguably our most important industry their candid opinions without fear of disclosure. I can also understand the desire to have these conversations revealed.

That being said, if Kerry is going to make a campaign claim that he has spoken to foreign leaders and been told by them that he has their support we should definitely know who they are. We should definitely question them on the veracity of Kerry's claim. Further, we should ask what, if anything, they have done in his behalf. I believe it is a felony for a foreign national to influence an election in the U.S. See the Gore scandal over campaign contributions from China. If there are national security issues that can justify his silence I'd sure like to hear them.

Considering the crew of people involved and their
past history rigging markets in california and the
UK, compounded by cheney's intimate relationship
with all these players makes the whole thing very
suspect, especially considering the veracity with
which he has fought disclosure.

ps. way to spin the kerry comment into a snowball
of national security risk!

Bush: Foreign Leaders Want Me to Fix Kerry's Wagon

(2004-03-16) -- In the wake of claims by Democrat presidential candidate John Forbes Kerry that foreign leaders hope he wins the White House, President George Bush today said "unnamed foreign leaders told me they want me to clean Kerry's clock, you know, to fix his wagon."

"They can't go out and say this publicly," Mr. Bush said, "but boy they look at you and say, 'You've got to pummel this wishy-washy appeaser. You've got to spank him with the buckle end of the belt'. Of course, I can't tell you who said that, but them foreigners want me to put a hurt on him."

Mr. Bush, like Mr. Kerry, spends hours every day chatting with foreign leaders to find out what kind of American foreign policy will be most popular with them. And while Mr. Kerry speaks fluent French thanks to childhood summers spent at a family estate in Brittany, Mr. Bush speaks Spanish and Pig Latin, which he calls "the new Esperanto...the global language of diplomacy."

"You wouldn't believe some of the things my foreign buddies have told me about Enator-say Erry-kay," said Mr. Bush. "It's all on the Q.T., of course."

Like I said, I can see both sides of the Cheney/energy industry thing. It will be decided in court. As far as Cal. getting ripped off, it takes two parties to sign a contract. There are two issues aside from the criminal fraud on Enron's part. One is due diligence on the part of Cal.'s government and the principle of Caveat Emptor, which means buyer beware. They were criminally stupid and derelict in their duty to protect the people of Cal. in signing those contracts in the first place. I, in no way, mean to excuse Enron but those contracts were an invitation to be fucked.

I didn't say there was a national security risk involved here. I was saying that I don't think there is a national security rationale for not disclosing who these conversations were with. It is a felony for a foreign national to get involved in U.S. elections. I believe Charlie Trie and some others went to jail or remain fugitives for their activities on behalf of Al Gore.

I want to know who he is refering to and he has no excuse for keeping silent. He should've kept his fucking mouth shut in the first place. What the hell was he thinking when he said this, that it would help his campaign to appeal to internationalists. He already has all of them. He's just dumb and dishonest.

You don't seem to understand the detauls of the
california energy crisis.

Long term energy contracts were struck because
energy prices were continuing to skyrocket, so they
locked them in at a rate that would prevent added
price inflation, albeit higher rates relative to the historic
cost of energy in the state.

enron and the other privatization players rigged the
markets in california.

They cut supply, plain and simple, forced prices up,
panicked the state and locked them into a very lucrative
contract.

To blame this on the government of california is a joke.

These guys pushed the privatization and then milked that
fucker for all it was worth.

I guess Kerry is claiming that foreign leaders have expressed support for him in private, but aren't willing to make it public. If that's the case, it does him no good, and it was stupid of him to ever bring it up.  It's also pretty stupid to lose his head like that over a heckler.

I'll vote for him because he's not a Republican. I don't have to like it. :nonono:
