Do you trust your phone/google? * 3
    #24437826 - 06/26/17 10:59 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Call me crazy, but lately I've been noticing a strange trend going on with my phone and google.
It maybe a coincidence but sometimes I'll be talking out loud about something (such as new gym shoes) and then later that day I will be getting advertisements on Facebook/google relating to new gym shoes!

It happened to my girlfriend yesterday, we were discussing pineapples and how you can cut the top off and grow it outside. Later that day she went on google and typed "how to" and literally "how to grow a pineapple" popped up in the search.

Ya think our phones are listening mannnnnn?
Should I be grabbing my tinfoil hat?

I've noticed things like that with google, but also with my pandora app.

I get ads pertaining to my occupation constantly.

Of course they're listening. It's common knowledge now. The good thing is  that there are billions of people and they don't have the man power to listen to everybody.

It's possible, and very possible for others to do so. I don't think Google does it though. Not for ethical reasons or for being good people, but because the backlash would be enormous. It does record and store your voice on a database when you use voice search though. But recording you while you're not actively engaged with it is not something it needs to do. It can use your entire internet search history, the youtube videos you watch, your location, previous purchases, etc. to algorithmically tailor results that will catch your eye for various reasons, and that they might line up with things isn't entirely by coincidence in the least.

They don't need to record you while you're not listening - they have enough information already, and it would be bad publicity for them if they did.

They have been doing this to gmail users for awhile now (reading their emails to advertise tailored to the user)...so much that they are about to change their policies on advertisements due to privacy concerns. This is fairly new, search it up on google. (The fact that they are about to change it I mean)

Dude, you're not tripping.
I'm not sure if it's Google, Facebook...or something else.

I'm pretty sure they aren't opening up the mics on our phones randomly to know what we like, but a simple search, or even beginning a search for something without hitting enter will suggest you products and services related to it in the near future. Or the same day, for that matter. And I'm pretty sure that if you have a Gmail account, you give consent that Google may open up any of your emails they choose.

(Reminds me of the human centipede ep. of South Park where Kyle didn't read the Apple user agreement. )

There was one particular instance where facebook and their marketing really fucked with my head. My wife and I were talking about possibly trying for a baby girl in the near future, and a couple days later my FB feed as well as google started suggesting baby items, but not only that, specifically female baby toys, clothes, etc...

:paranoid:

Fuckin weird....

Their algorithms are incredibly intuitive. If they know 4 other facts from searches and likes and so on they can make remarkably good guesses. Pineapples or baby names... even if it's only 10% dead on that 10% is spooky.

That's because they no longer need to. GPS data, apps, searches, maybe texts

Shit man emails are so yesterday

I almost never even use email anymore

You are just now noticing this?
I wont install or allow updates for anything related to facebook or google on my phone. It pisses me off because facebook almost forces you to install messenger to see your messages. I don't have any problem through a web browser on my laptop, but when I log into facebook using a web browser on my phone it almost always tells me I have to download messenger to read my messages... even in incognito mode.

nah.

my dad works in high level infoSec stuff.

I work in big data. I know a few different people who hack into government systems in order to know the exact time when the next bus is coming, ffs.

I trust no device - you can VPN it up, only browse via TOR,take all the basic precautions the general population fails to - but the fact is that if someone wants access to a device badly enough, they WILL get it.

That being said, that doesn't mean you shouldn't  pay attention to this shit and adjust your location/privacy settings accordingly. I'm telling you now though, if someone wants your information enough to single it out and go after it, they can and will get it.

Yeah, pretty much. My phone's bluetooth is always off, and airplane mode is always on.
Every time you connect to a WiFi you become vulnerable...
Which is why I never carry a phone when I'm doing anything potentially criminal.

Or at least - stuff your local gov. is interested in pursuing/prosecuting.

Here, weed is still illegal but it's decriminalized and you have nothing to worry about unless you're moving lbs.

I do worry about my acid/psychedelic connects - they seem to come and go of their own volition, luckily - sometimes it means I can't find it for months because my connect has up and left on some fantastic bohemian adventure and is somewhere else, and well...I'd much rather that than the alternative.

That is true and it will only get worse...more and more technological integration into the human life. There is no escape really unless you want to be outside the system, just like in the matrix.
