Just poured 36 of em, I was a bit on the fence before sterilization because of the slipperiness of the PP, but after the first sterilization they felt a lot less slippery. I LOVE EM! Haven't inoculated anything yet, but for now I'd say these will be my favorite new petri plates!

Do they appear as pictured or are they more opaque/translucent? Those dishes that are pictured look really clear for PP.

The average milk production facility tosses out more petri dishes a week than the entire shroomery probably uses in a year.

A small 15k bbl brewery can toss out a case of 500 a week.

Besides that PS is very recyclable
The styrofoam is the hassle EPS(expanded PS)

And I still find that a poor excuse to not prevent plastic waste.

New women are born everyday, and their bodies decompose perfectly, even better without being embalmed. :rolleyes:

That's true but there's this weird thing among MC that our plastic petri waste is an abomination. Yall dump out more PS from drink cups and food service waste.

At least our waste is balanced by the production. Unlike say getting a coke from McDonald's which is pure waste. Our waste is accompanied by something productive.

The hardest (most time consuming) part is dumping out the old media and washing the plates.  Even PS type plates CAN be reused.  I've sterilized used PS plates several times now and intend to continue doing it.  I've even sterilized PP containers without heat just because I can do more at a time than I can in the pressure cooker.

The problem is that sterilization kills, deactivates, or eliminates all forms of life and other biological agents which are present.  This means any method of doing this is going to be dangerous.

Really? I find popping a rounded metal skewer under the agar easy enough... After that, a warm soapy water and a soft cloth will wipe away any remainders of agar, then an alcohol rag can wipe the writings off. I have 100 PP plates, I bet I won't start cleaning until I'm down to 20. 80 plates will probably cost me about an hour to clean, not including sterilization.

Where exactly did it take long?

It isn't that it is real hard to clean the plates to be reused.  It just takes longer than it would just to open a new pack and start pouring them.

Last time I reused some, I think I did 40 or 50 at once.  It took me less than an hour to clean the magic marker off them, dump the old media, wash them with soapy water, rinse them, and dry them.  It takes 2 or 3 hours in my homemade sterilizer (which is really just waiting so no real effort required)  and then 10 minutes or so in front of the HEPA filter to reassemble them.

It's well worth my time to reuse them but not everyone is going to want to spend the time to do it especially if they are buying their plates by the case and getting them fairly cheap.

I don't know how many plates I can sterilize at one time yet.  I use mostly 47 mm Millipore plates and I'm sure I could easily do 100 of them at once.  My smaller PP plates I could do more than that.

Just for fun ... 100 plates in 1 hour ... Labor @ $15/hr ... $15/10 = $1.50 for 10 plates not counting the cost to heat the water and the energy used to sterilize them.

I don't have a dishwasher but that would make reusing the plates even easier.

If I'm only making 20 plates or so, I just put the PP plates in my smallest PC along with the media so they get sterilized at the same time as the media.

I now have a couple freezer bags full of sterilized PP plates so the next few batches I only need to sterilize the media.  I can't say I won't buy more "disposable" petri dishes but I intend to keep reusing the PP and PS ones as long as I can.

Those are just slightly larger than the 47 mm ones I use the most.  I get 20 or more plates filled with just 100 ml of media.  I think you will really like them.  They don't use a lot of media and they colonize fast.  If they are similar to the PP ones I have, they won't be as clear as the PS ones but still usable.

I have some glass plates too but I prefer the smaller and lighter plastic ones for most things.

Well these are going to be great I normally do a no poor agar but this will give me the ability to sterilize the plates and the agar at the same time then poor, I can also put a stack of these in a grow bag to sterilize for later on  if I wish
