Brought to you by THE TRIBE Hello Shroomery! Polyfil Do you use polyfil in your tub holes for colonization or fruiting? Do you find it messy? Is it a pain in the ass when you harvest and your fruits get covered in polyfil? Do your fruits push the polyfil out of your tubs? Do you find yourself picking polyfil from between your toes more often than not? Well, I have a giant bag of polyfil that I use. It is still 98% full. But I am just about sick of using polyfil. It gets all over the floor, between my toes. I randomly find pieces of it that makes it's way into odd spaces in the house. Pics below show fruits being tangled with polyfil and the mess created in polyfil after a harvest. The Discovery: I use these fish filters for fish filtration as well as filters for my ac material and now my monotubs. They work well. This is a filter material that can be used for 3 different purposes. Pinky brand fish filters are a great breathable material to use as a filter on your tubs. If you are like me, you have a ton of tubs with holes in them already. Pinky Brand Fish Filters used in place of polyfil. These are used for fish tank filtration. You can obtain these filters on ebay or amazon. You can get a 10' rolls for 10$ or buy in bulk and get a bigger discount. For 6 tubs I used a few feet of the roll. The Idea: They are made cut to fit for fish tank filters. It is a steal deal for fish filters, monotub filters and AC filter material. It may cost you 3$ or more to buy an AC filter. You can use chicken wire cut to fit for your ac filter and wrap this material on it.You can then replace your AC filter anytime you need to at a fraction of the cost. The pinky filters work and can be reused with or without a pressure cooker after a flush. I have attemped up to 5 re uses in a row of this filter material. Each flush was clean and produced multiple flushes. If there are spores on the filters between flushes, simply rinse it out with the sink or your shower head. You can also pressure cook them for 30 minutes at 15psi if your scared homie. Pressure cooker test: I usually use these filters over flush after flush. Unless there is a contam present I then pressure cook them. The filters can be used over and over between flushes. You can pressure cook them in a quart mason jar for 30 minutes at 15psi. It is easy to place in a pasty plate batch or even with your grain jars. What you will need:
Summary: This is real easy. There are 4 steps. Spawn your monotub that has holes in it. Use the filter 3 folding method during bulk substrate colonization. When pins form to 1/2" in size, Switch your top two filters in your tub to the rolled method. Switch the bottom 4 to a slightly tighter rolled method. Then you harvest your fruits. It can't be much easier than that. You don't need to change the filters, look at any conditions or do much of anything other than harvest. Let the mushrooms fruit themselves. STEP 1: 3 Folding Method: You use this for bulk substrate colonization Filter Creation: For tub holes 1.5 inches in diameter, I Took a 4" strip of filter. Cut multiple 4" x 4" strips. (*Tub Hole Size Note: Depending on the size of the holes in your tub you may need to adjust the filter size you cut. so if its a 4x4" for a 1.5" hole, maybe you use a 5x5" square for a 2" hole), Fold each 4" x 4" strip in half. Make sure you fold the pink part on the inside, white part on the outside. Then fold it in half once more. You will see one side has all white. Fold it in half one more time for the 3rd fold. This is what it looks like inside and out. Put the filters in the holes. All filters are applied the same way. Same thickness, same folds. Inside: Outside: STEP 2: Spawn your monotub with clean spawn: This is how I spawn. EAT’S UNBUCK3T TEK™ Use whichever method works best for you with spawning. I generally go 5 quarts of clean oat spawn to a small brick of Eco earth coir/ 3 quarts vermiculite/ 4.5 quarts water or sometimes strawnet/dung. All bulk spawning should work the same. I like mixing up my grain and bulk substrate nice and even and very light and fluffy. I make sure the surface is extremely level as i can get it by eye. This will work with or without a liner. Although, I prefer liners when it is time for clean up. I can flip my liner inside out and chunk the bulk sub easily. It also allows me to throw my kitchen trash in the same bag. After the substrate and spawn are mixed nice and evenly it should look like this. Some people cut their liners. I don't, I just fold them over in the corners. The results are the same. I use 30 gallon glad trash bags. I open one side and the sub basically sits on the outside of the bag. Take note: There is no fan being used in this setup. The only airflow in the grow room is from the central heating and air. It is passive airflow. The tubs are placed in a closet with good 6500k lighting. So the airflow getting to the tubs is from indirect hvac current. No fan is being used at all. STEP 3: Change Filters To Rolled Method During Fruiting After full colonization, you will begin to see pins form after a few days. There will be water droplets on the substrate. This is good. When the pins begin to form to about 1/2" in size, you will then change your filters in the top holes to rolled. When the pins look like the image below it is time to change your filters. Here is a breakdown in what the surface should look like. You shouldn’t need to observe much because most of the time if the formula and environment are done properly the mushrooms basically fruit themselves. SURFACE CONDITIONS This is easy. Take your 3 folded filters out of the top two holes. Roll each one in a spiral. Place them back in your tub top holes. You can see a before and after showing when I changed my filters for reference. Before(3 Folded Filters) After(Rolled Filters Applied 6 days after bulk sub fully colonized) Now take your 4 bottom hole filters out and fold them like so. Second, I fold about 1/3 of one side over. You keep the pink part on the bottom, the white part on the top as you fold. You then roll the filter into a cylinder perpendicular to the part you folded over. the white part will be on the inside as you roll. Finally place this side into the tub hole facing inside the tub. What this does, is still provide great fae, keeps the moisture in the tub and it doesn't interfere with any fruits or get pushed out of the hole. it goes in to the hole fairly tight. The beauty of these filters is that you can use the filter for colonization and fruiting without having to tape any holes, add any tape or covering while colonizing. its a one stop shop. set and forget. You can also push the edge of the filter to be flush with the tub. You can see the image below with the top filters rolled and the bottom filters rolled as described above. A few days later The fruits will begin to mature and then it will be time to harvest. Easy peasy, you can get full canopy multispore flushes without observing anything. Let the mushrooms fruit themselves. STEP 4: Harvest After you are done it is time to print. OG SPORE PRINT TEK™ Pros: 1) Reusable material that can be pressure cooked and used again. 2) Easy clean up, easy prep 3) no polyfil between your toes or mess 4) no dialing in your tubs. you don't have to remove a filter or any polyfil. the filter works during colonization and fruiting. 5) they fit nice and snug in your monotub holes 6) they can be cut to fit any size you need 7) if you dunk tubs between flushes, you won't have your polyfil come out or make a mess. At times. 8) Your fruits growing near the polyfil won't be covered in polyfil 8) harvesting won't be as messy when you remove your substrate from your tub. 10) your tubs don't need to be dialed in at all. leave them as is, the filters do all the work. 11)I can get a 10' roll of pinky filters for 9$ and use it for the rest of my life. 12) This is my opinion. I like it better than polyfil. I didn't have any tangled fruits, dunking was simple, harvesting was simple. You don't even have to remove the filters from the whole when you pull your substrate out of the tub to harvest. It was a much smoother ride than using polyfil. I was still picking polyfil from between my toes from the previous harvest. From now on, that won't happen. I have decided to make the switch. Cons: 1) They cost a little more than polyfil 6 Pinky Filter Hole Tubs of AA+ Clone Below: Post Flush Pressure Cook: This is the image of the filters after a flushed out tub.If there is debris simply rinse out the filter with the facet, a sink spray nozzle, or a shower head. This batch didn't require any cleaning. This is one reason I love working with this material. It is very easy to clean and reuse. Now I am prepping some pasty plates for some transfers. I am throwing in this quart mason jar filled with used pinky filters for 45 minutes at 15psi. I think you can get away with 20-30 minutes at 15psi if you need to. Research Below Below you will find the information on how the tek was dialed in through experiments and multiple tests. All tests were successful. Any issues are a matter of dialing in the filters and making minor tweaks to create an easy to use filter material. Polyfil Do you use polyfil in your tub holes for colonization or fruiting? Do you find it messy? Is it a pain in the ass when you harvest and your fruits get covered in polyfil? Do your fruits push the polyfil out of your tubs? Do you find yourself picking polyfil from between your toes more often than not? Well, I have a giant bag of polyfil that I use. It is still 98% full. But I am just about sick of using polyfil. For years I have been on a quest to find something to replace polyfil. I have tried micropore tape, tyvek, press n seal, saran wrap, ez felt and a number of other things over the years. But nothing has worked as good for my environment as polyfil has at a good cost point. PinPornProducer came up with an idea to wrap the polyfil with pantyhose to keep it more manageable. I like that idea. You can see it illustrated in the link below. Pantyhose Polyfil I even made these cool ironed polyfil filters by Dilated. But I found it extremely labor intensive. Half the time I could not get the iron to mesh the filters together. It ended up being more work, more gluing, more sealing to get magnets and other things on the tubs. It took me roughly 3 hours to make enough filters for two tubs. This didn't include cutting the megnets and gluing them to the tubs. You can see some of those magnets still attached to tubs in images below. I was too lazy to remove them. The magnets are not being used for any reason. One by one they will be removed. The ironed filters ended up being more work than I wanted to do. After I made 12 of them I ended up giving up. The filters did work. But in the end I want easy, these pinky filters are really easy. Ironed Polyfil Filters The Discovery: I use these fish filters for fish filtration as well as filters for my ac material. They work well. If I can use these for my monotubs, then its a filter material that can be used for 3 different purposes. If the pinky filters work and can be reused,it should be worth the investment. I could not find any information on what the material is made out of. A pressure cooker test will be needed to find out if these filters can withstand the heat. I am assuming pinky filters are made from some type of polyfil like material. These filters can be rinsed out and reused as fish filtration multiple times. They are made of a hardy material. I am confident this material will work for fruiting and the remaining mushroom life cycle inside the fruiting chamber. I invite you to come join the test to contribute your findings in this thread. Pressure cooker test 1: I placed a small piece of filter in a glad round. I pressure cooked the filter for 30 minutes at 15psi. Low and behold they did not melt. So these filters are reusable! The real question is, how long will they last? What you will need:
Filter Creation: 1) Folding Method: For tub holes 1.5 inches in diameter, I Took a 4" strip of filter. Cut multiple 4" x 4" strips. From the inside the filter will look like this. 1) Rolling Method: I also tried a rolling method. I cut 2"x4" pieces. I rolled each one with the white part on the outside. I then folded the roll in half with the white side on the outside and put the filter in each hole. This is 2 days after the tub 1 was spawned. As you can see, the tub is dialing itself in. Colonization is done in the same room with the same conditions as fruiting. When the shrooms are ready to fruit, They fruit. No conditions were changed to induce fruiting. This is a few days after spawning. the top layer is almost done. Test: We are going to test 6 tubs with the pinky filters in place of polyfil. All 6 tubs are being tested with the same culture AA+ clone from the thread below. Additionally, there are 6 polyfil stuffed tubs being done side by side. There is a comparison at the end of the thread. Official AA+ Thread If you decide to test these filters, I would suggest following whatever methods work for you for spawning, environment and fruiting. This is simply what I used to test these filters. The idea is to get results on varied environments, bulk substrates, spawn. Ideally testing any and all methods would be the end goal. The 1st tub will be tested using the rolling method. The remaining 5 tubs will be tested with the folding method. The only reason is that it is my assumption that the folding method will work better. In observation, the rolling method filters appeared to allow a higher amount of airflow into the tubs. At first I thought it might be too much airflow and that the current coming from the fan on medium speed would dry out the top layer too fast. Tub 1 was misted two times through colonization and fruiting. My personal goal for my environment is no surface watering or maintenance other than harvesting after spawning. I want every tub to be self sustaining without having to add any water, mist or adjust anything. If misting is required, then I have to switch things up to account for moisture loss. This may require making the pinky filters a little bigger and tighter in the holes, adjusting my moisture level when spawning to bulk substrates due to my higher airflow in the growing environment. Or lowering the fan speed in the room. unfortunately only 2 fan speed mechanisms were available at home depot to replace the 3 speed when the fan broke. This results in a medium fan speed rather than the preferred slow fan speed. My personal goal is to make as little busy work as possible. If you run one tub, you have plenty of time to mist and open your tubs. When you run more than 1 tub, every little extra step you do to mist, open lids and adjust things adds time and effort to your grow cycle. This is the opposite methodology that we want here. We want the filters to work so well they do all the work for you. There is no claim that these filters will work any better than polyfil. We don't want to use polyfil anymore. There is a list of pros and cons at the end of this thread that will be updated as research continues. I would like to see some varying tests using this material from different climates to see if they work in others environments. I will update this list as the tests come to fruition. We can fill in details later of hole adjustments ect. Four of my top choices would be: 1) the frozen tundra 2) the desert 3) tropical environment w/ 50%RH in the room, medium speed ceiling fan, natural daylight. the filters succeeded 4) the swamp
Environment Tested For this study: In this test, the RH is 50% in the room. A ceiling fan is placed on medium speed. I preferred slow speed but not available). I am simply using CVG with a top layer at spawning. Casing at Spawning I put all the filters in at the same tightness and everything is set in fruiting conditions after the tubs are spawned. When the mushrooms are ready, they will fruit themselves. This is the type of grow cycle I normally run. The only time I will open these is when they are being harvested or pictures to be taken at stages. Additionally, there are sometimes 10-14 hour gaps between times when these tubs were opened for pictures or what not. There is very little maintenance or busy work involved with this environment. For this test, this is my personal environment, and I would love to see how these filters fare with other's environmental growth parameters and setups. Lighting: Natural daylight coming in through a window will be used for fruiting. There is nothing fancy rigged up like grow lights, timers or anything. The blinds are pointed downward in the window and there is indirect light coming through the window. In this instance I am not able to turn a grow light on and off on a timer. This will vary for everyones situation. Make sure to use what works best for you. For me, no automation or hot lights are key to the grow at hand. Not that I don't recommend good lighting, I am simply explaining what is happening with this grow. I expect fruits to go every which way till Sunday from the indirect light. Airflow, Evaporation, Ect.: There is a ceiling fan in the room on medium speed. The tubs are positioned on the side of the room so there isn't heavy airflow directly on them. It is more of a medium airflow. All of the filters are placed in medium tight. This is a little higher airflow than I normally run so there might be a few adjustments needed to dial the setup in. This is the first time I am running the current setup and this entire thread is the dial in. From test tub 1 a little misting is necessary as the fan speed is causing a little coir drying. This will be adjusted on the next run. Possibly using the folded filter method. The tub 1 trial was a little dry on the fan side of the tub. So a little misting was necessary. You can see the flush in Tub 1 showing a massing on one side of the tub and not much growth on a small portion of the tub nearest the fan side. This area had dry spots on the coir. This is another reason I believe that the folded method will work better. Let's see what happens. You can see the dialing in affect of the tubs. The filter was not adjusted during the entire colonization or fruiting cycle of the mushroom crop. The filter simply did the job necessary without any adjustments. This is another benefit of these filters. You don't have to take polyfil out, feather it out and dial in top holes or anything like that. You don't have to duct tape your holes during colonization. I do believe you could place the filters folded in a different way in different holes to adjust anything necessary for your environment. For instance, maybe you use the rolling method on the top holes or the folding method in the bottom holes. I don't know yet, but it is something to keep in mind. So far, the rolling method worked perfectly. The flush was 5 days faster than normal speeds with this AA+ clone culture. And this culture is 2 years older than the previous fruits in the Official AA+ thread. Side by side, the tub was fruited with 3 other tubs containing polyfil material. This tub flushed 2 days faster than all of those tubs. It could be coincidence and that is what I want to find out and I need your help. There is no claim that these filters will speed up your flush. We are trying to figure out how they work. Tub 1 Results: Come join the project! Substrate Per Tub: 1:2 Ratio Spawn: substrate:5 Quarts Oat spawn:
Observations: Tub 1: Out of a side by side test, tub 1 was grown in a batch that had 3 other polyfil stuffed tubs. All 4 tubs were spawned at the same time. This tub fruited the fastest out of 4 total tubs. The tub was harvested on day 14 from spawning. Spawned 5-19, harvested 6-3. 14 days is not too shabby for a 2 year old clone! It is actually 5 days faster than when the clone was fresh in 2015. This clone is now 2 years old. Tub 1 had a little drying. I believe with a more subtle airflow the rolling method will work perfectly with little to no drying on the top layer therefore misting won't be necessary. The first attempt was a little dry but still produced a nice flush with two misting sessions before pinning. On tubs 2-6 the flushes were reaching for the window 2 days after pinning. Two of the tubs used have solid lids whereas the other 4 have clear lids. These two flushes visibly have the fruits reaching to the side toward the window with the light coming in. Two days into fruiting when the mushrooms began reaching for the light, the tubs were flipped 180 degrees from the direction they were facing. Tubs 2-5 were harvested on day 15 from spawn to harvest. Tub 5 had all bottom holes folded. The two top holes were rolled. This tub had the largest flush. Most of the fruits were almost hitting the lid. There was a noticeable difference with this minor adjustment. Unfortunately, yield will have to be tested next time. Tub 6 was spawned 12 hours later than 2-5 and had a thicker top layer. It was harvested on day 15 from spawn to harvest. Yield was not tested in this trial. Yield will be tested in the near future to see if there is a significant difference. I will do a total comparison for shits and giggles and see if there is any difference. I don't think there will be. The goal was achieved. This was to find a replacement for polyfil that can take a beating and be reused. On a few of the tubs the harvests timing was off. Some of them had to be prematurely harvested due to time restraints. Additionally, I am making the switch because it was a smooth ride on the initial tests. I have 3 other rolls of this material and it should last a long time. If I have enough to fill all of the tub holes I have, then ideally I can reuse it and never have to buy these filters again? Or will I? That is the question. Will this material last the test of time with multiple pressure cook sessions? We will try this out and report and update as findings continue. Round 2: First Use Pressure Cooked Filters For this round I am re-using the filters that were used on the first initial test. This is after the pressure cook in the post above. I am going to attempt something different on round 2 in the fruiting section. I am keeping the fan off for this set of tubs. I plan on colonizing the substrates to 80% then placing the top filters to the rolled position during fruiting. I will not be using a fan for this run unless it is necessary. 2 bricks coir/ 2 cups gypsum, 2 cups strawnet(im conserving what i have left. i used to put about 6 cups to 12 cups verm to 3 bricks coir for 4 monotubs) This will be for 2 monotubs. i plan on doing one texyc ms and one texyc clone from 2014 stem tissue. put all the ingredients in a bucket poured 10 quarts of boiling water over it and put the lid on. spawning later today after it is mixed. Airflow: For this round I am attempting to skip using a fan for airflow. I intend to adjust the filters when fruiting begins. I have all of the filters placed tightly in all holes during colonization. When fruiting begins, i Intend to place the top holes loosely with the rolling method. If that doesn't work, I will attempt to stuff the filters in the holes the way morelman did. As a last resort, I will turn the fan on. Folding Methods: Rolled Method: Stuffed Method: 2 Fold method: From the outside the filter will look like this. From the inside the filter will look like this. 3 Fold Method: Inside: Outside: Test We will be testing 4 multispore LGT, 2 Multispore Tex Yellow Cap, 2 clones Tex Yellow Cap.
Notes: I was trying to dial in this no fan setup. This was the first initial tub that I had 3 fold filters in all the way during fruiting. When the fruits were about 3 inches I changed the filters up. When I made the switch on the next TYC clone tub you can see the difference. The difference was putting in the filters with the rolled method when the pins were 1/2" tall. This was 1-2 days earlier than this first initial test tub. My revived clone from 2014 stem tissue suffered the consequences for the experiment. But the 2nd try was the correct dial.
half this tub was printed. Notes: This tub was the first to be dialed in correctly using the rolled method after the pins became 1/2". The filters were kept with the 3 fold method until pins formed to 1/2 inch. All of the filters in the tub were then switched to the rolled method. This was the result. The 2nd LGT tub below also had the correct dial in. With 4 Quarts of spawn the yield was very similar and had a higher BE than the equivalent tub. Since this was multispore its a wash. But an interesting observation. I believe the dial in 1-2 days aerlier made the difference but we won't know until we test the TYC clones again.
BE coir: 447g vermiculite: 142g x3= 426g 1 cup gypsum: 200g 5 Quarts Grain: 1102.5g = 2175g dry weight of substrate LGT Tub 1= 2032g/2175g=.934 x 100 = 93.4% Notes: All the filters were placed in 3 folded during colonization. once the pins were an inch tall the all of the filters were changed to the rolling method. 2 hours before harvest the top two filters were removed. when there is a wall to wall flush, judge by eye and remove the filters if needed. this fruited well with very little maintenance and no airflow other than the hvac of the house. there were no fans turned on for the entire grow.
Tub Ratio: 1 brick coir/ 2 cups strawnet/ 1 cup gypsum/ 4 Quarts Oat Grain coir: 447g strawnet: 170x2= 340g 1 cup gypsum: 200g 4 Quarts Grain: 882g = 1869g dry weight of substrate LGT Tub 1= 1937g/1869g=1.04 x 100 = 104.0% Notes: The lower 4 quart of spawn had a very close yield compared to the 5 quart. The BE was a little higher.

Hi, sorry it took so long for me to report. I used the pinkie on one of the 50 quart monotubs utilized as a fruiting chamber, and fruited an LGT, and PEU multispore, straight cased grain trays inside of it. First I cut a piece of pink at 3 by 6 inches. To stuff the holes I lightly rolled the material until just before the material fell out of the holes, and fruited as normal.

Here's a couple of tubs so far. I didn't take second flush pics because my camera broke (just got a new one) but they were great as well. It works! I followed the same outlines as the op, but where I live the inside temp is 75 and the ambient humidity is 40 to 50%. I'm doing some more tubs currently and will update as it progresses. To follow my procedure, read my grow log here. No fan was used in the grow space.
Pinky filter material arrived and 4"x4" squares were cut from the roll. The remaining roll fits perfectly inside a turkey sized oven bag. Filters were washed, folded in half and loaded into a pc safe, PP5, container and sterilized for one hour @15psi. When the substrate fully colonized after four days, I cut out four 1-1/2" holes; one high on either end and one low on both sides about 2" above the substrate. The Pinky filters on the end were poked in and the other two in the middle were rolled. After I observed knots, one of the rolled filters above the substrate was removed and poked into the hole. Just place your finger in the center of the pink and push it in the hole. When primordia and pins were observed, the last rolled filter was removed and poked in. When the veils began opening, I removed the filters from the end holes. They were rolled and placed back in. Twelve hours later. In conclusion and final thoughts: There are a few ways I fold; listed in order from tightest FAE to loosest FAE. 1. Folded three times and stuffed in vertically. 2. Poked in halfway. 3. Rolled into a cylinder and stuffed in halfway with the end seam facing down. Two holes on each long side would result in an even canopy. I prefer to harvest everything when the fruits in the center start to release spores. Increasing the overall potency to weight ratio, IMO. In other words; sacrificing some weight for increasing the average potency of the flush. This may not work in your growing space exactly the way mine did. Everyones space is different. Different air currents, temperatures, RH, etc. You will have to experiment and monitor your tubs to find the sweet spot for each stage of development. Once you figure that out, you can rely on consistant results every time. If you like to harvest when the veil opens, but before they drop spores, simply leave all your filters poked in. The fruits will mature but the caps will not fully open. To get a full canopy, divide the long side of your tub into thirds. Drill your four holes, two on each side, on the dividing lines.
