Is a 66 qt SG FC big enough for 18 half pint BRF cakes?
    #24426628 - 06/22/17 02:51 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Simple question. I'm worried that they'll be crammed in there and not have enough room to grow correctly.

A standard Sterilite 66qt tub can fit up to 24 wide mouth half pints with about an inch of space around each one.

Remember Legos?
Like that, but not plastic.
Or colorful,
Or with little yellow people,
Or pegs.

But just like. Legos

some people use a chop stick or skewer to hold them together

Better off getting a cheap plastic kitchen stand than letting two subs ready for fruiting to go into a colonize mode.

Not the kind of answers I wanted to hear. If they're growing from the top of the cake, wouldn't the mushrooms be growing into the cake on top of that? It just seems weird.

once you get a feel of those cakes, you will eventually stack them.
and you will just be like oh,  a mushroom was gunna come out the top. :cookiemonster:

but you really should not stack them for your first go around, or at all because tubs are pretty cheap and some cakes will go bad, but if you are frugal or just super lazy like i am despite my high motivation then it will work lol

flush them until they mold and then make a yeck face and throw them over the fence!

Stacking cakes works fine. You might not get a full "twice as much" but you will definitely get more. Doubling the cakes will produce more fruits as long as they don't dry out.

Thank you for the replies. I'll definitely stick to the 24 cakes (once I make a new batch of 6) for now but in the future I would like to advance my grow methods. I want to do grains but I've seen most people do them in larger jars and my small PC won't fit them all sadly.

You surely don't have to use large jars for grains but its epic work. You could use bods easy AF oat prep in pint jars or half pints even. For the purposes of doing bulk preparations it just happens to be faster to do a lot at once. I have been spawning 4 quarts per one coir brick, that would be hard with a small canner to achieve in jars.

You can also just crumble cakes into a substrate like partially pasturized coir as a bulk spawn. Once you have a good idea of what your myc should look like, how wet it should be, how much fresh air to give you start playing a complex game of memory trying to remember what flush what cakes are in. With a bulk tub you don't have the confusion and harvest fatigue.

You could fit quart bags in a smaller pressure canner and use bags instead of jars as a third option.

Many of the bulk techniques are designed to take less time and use less tubs without the confusion of dunking 9 cakes and remembering their locations in the SGFC by looks(they all look the same).

The only way to learn is to watch the 24 cakes through flushes and get to the point where you recognize the smell, looks, and entropy of the cakes and then the bulk will be much easier. I look at cakes as small failures to learn with.  one bulk tub as a noob feels like all my eggs in one basket.
