As mrmazdarx9 said, a hole saw is best.
If you dont mind breathing molten/burning plastic fumes then soldering iron, but I wouldnt recommend that.

when doing plastic things I always use either the scalpel or a bicycle wheel spoke. The molten plastic fumes are not that bad this way (in terms of amount, and I do it outside) and if you draw out the shape beforehand it works fine. You have to heat it up multiple times, but I get a 6 inch hole out with about 6-7 reheatings. I do plastic lid mods (hole to silicone/polyfill) too this way.

It's quite a bit more than a half pint, remember the PF tek is looking for US half pint jars, half a US pint is 237 ml. Plenty of people have used them with success.

Tinned steak & kidney type pies come in wide diameter tins.

Cookie tin.
Edit: I would never use a metal container since mycelium seems to eat it. But Ikea has "pepperkaka" which is gingerbread I think, in those wide but low tin cans. They're close to the restaurant and in the food section in my Ikea.
2nd edit: mushrooms are known to draw contaminants from the soil. Ovoideocystidiata and other wood lovers, I've even seen being sold purposefully as a soil treatment mushroom to take away heavy metals from the soil. I have no idea whether this might be only a "well, this way it's legal to sell" kind of thing with possibly no science backing it though... We'd have to have shrooms tested in a lab to know for sure, or check the science literature on ovoids and other woodlovers, to know with doubtful certainty..

Oh, ok, the Ikea tins are too big for that. In Europe, getting a tin like that would probably entail getting a business number, so being an entrepreneur. Food here VERY rarely comes in packaging that big... Heated scalpel FTW!
