Hey all, i am just wondering if anyone has had luck finding chaga, Ive been traveling all over trying to find it. in pa, upstate ny, and some parts of nj there are so many birches and never have i seen one. i keep reading and staring at pictures but no luck
if you are a chaga hunter maybe you can help with some simple questions?
1. am i too south? 2. has anyone actually found them on other than white birch? 3. how common are they on birch trees? like 1 in 20, or one in a million? if you had to guess?
thanks in advance for any guidance.

I'll keep an eye out for it. Do you know what other kinds of tree it grows from besides birch? Pretty much no birch here in SW Ohio, we're mostly oak, sugar maple, walnut, buckeye, and the odd conifer.

Hope I am not too late haha. Well as far as I have seen there is people who have found chaga all over north eastern USA including ohio. I have seen it quiet a bit here in central NJ before I knew what it was on all sorts of trees but never evergreens. They also say that chaga grows on other trees than birch also but not as likely.
Hope this helps.

I found them a few years back on White Birch in Central Jersey (Union county) and that was the only species of tree I considered. I've seen plenty of potential impostors on other trees and thanks to pseudotsuga for the link to the excellent fungimag article that may help put names to them. It's an excellent article on finding chaga and avoiding what's not. G
