@BODHISTA can you link me a appropriate turkey fryer for sterilizing grains and hydrating grains?
How about this one? I believe both of the links provided take you to the same page. However, that is a great burner for outdoor use. Theres a double burner on a metal stand that also works awesome that can be used indoors with caution. I dont have the link available for that one but search around. While cooking grain you dont need a burner more than a kitchen stove, unless you want to do it very fast and then its a better option for sure. Regardless, ive cooked 27 lbs of grain in a 40qt pot on the stove and it takes about 1 hours if you add hot tap.

Hello
I am new to the process and read somewhere that i may have to add a source of nitrogen to coir or coir with vermiculite because there isnt a significant amount in the substrate alone. Do you add any nitrogen to your substrate with your method?
Have you used this method for gourmet mushrooms as well? I'm starting with gourmet (oyster and shiitake, although I've read that shiitake are tricky sometimes) to get a feel for cultivation.

You honestly don't need anything additional to coir for Cubensis cultivation.
Vermiculite is an optional additive to provide additional moisture support, but isn't required.
If you're wanting to grow gourmets I would suggest a substrate more fitting for those species. I prefer supplemented sawdust blocks for oysters and shiitake.
Oysters love Soy Hull supplemented blocks and I've found Shiitake to perform better with Bran, but that's just one of many ways it can be done.
Cubensis honestly do not need this much nutrition to thrive, so coir based substrates are more ideal. The nutrients in the grains are plenty for these little babies!

Have people been successful using just coir with verm for gourmet mushrooms? i was thinking of doing 1/3 hardwood sawdust to compensate for any missing nutrient?

It's honestly best not to supplement coir which is why it's not ideal for gourmets as well. Grains provide enough nutrition for cubes.

So, to clarify, are you saying that most gourmet mushrooms can thrive on coir alone (or coir with verm)? I'm only growing gourmet right now to practice. Or should I supplement coir with a traditional substrate for gourmet species specifically? I'm just really new to this and want clarification because I still don't understand everything yet.

I mean you "can" do that and I've seen oysters grow from coco coir based substrates. I've seen this on several occasions with mislabeled cultures, however all of the professional mushrooms farmers/growers I know and even myself when I grow blue oysters and lion's mane on occasion have found these species to thrive much better on supplemented sawdust blocks, straw logs and other far more superior substrates than coir.
If your plan is to grow oysters in a monotub with just coir, supplemented coir, or coir verm you're not really going to be impressed with the outcome is all I'm gonna say.

I am guessing this is still the "go to" method lists even though BODs stuff is from 2017? It's still very informative but I'm just wondering if there is a more up to date and still this simplified, list of TEKs?

Bod
I appreciate your knowledge and insight. Hoping you can help me out
I usually use 64 or 66 quart tubs, but decided to try the 32 quart gasket tubs.
I read in a post of yours that you said there should be no problem with colonization in these, despite the lid being tightly on. However, I was unsure if you meant to have the lid on with the latches down or to have them unlatched.
Thank you

I have a question and not sure where to ask it so I'll start here. I recently acquired some semperviva liquid culture and am wondering how to use it. Do I just squirt it onto some sterilized grain or something?

It's LC for sure, not spores? Either way, I would inoculate some agar plates with it and go to grains with clean agar culture. If it is in fact LC you could go directly to grains after testing it for contamination on agar if you want.
Here's a link to a thread about cultivating them. Also here's a post detailing one user's methods used to grow this species, pulled from their signature / journal.
Semps seem pretty tricky though, especially for a beginner. I always recommend getting the basics down with an easier species like Ps. cubensis.
