Hello all,
After recently having great success in the world of agar I decided to get some jars and level up my spawn game.
Everything appeared to be going swimmingly (following BOD's unreal TEK's) until I noticed what looks like penicillium (dusty, bluey-green in colour) infecting my jars!
I tossed two already and have just noticed some individual grains in two of my remaining jars that appear infected.
My question:
What is the likely cause of this infection? It seems that my SAB technique is effective as the contamination has only appeared toward the bottom of the jars, suggesting to me that it somehow was already in the jars after PC'ing, or that it has somehow entered through my Polyfil lid filter and made it past the growing mycellium?
Appreciate all comments and input, off to make some more oat spawn ASAP!

I would guess as your jars cooled the spores got sucked in through a defective filter or one that wasn’t seated properly or if you didn’t cook them for two hours at 15 psi in a pressure cooker. Try letting the PC cool inside the SAB.
It could’ve came from the syringe you used or hitched a ride on the transfer in your SAB .
Did you flame your needle ? I use a little squeeze bottle of isopropyl alcohol and give my needle a power flush before the flame. A drop of isopropyl won’t kill the syringe and it’ll ensure that connection sterile or at least sanitized .
Anyway moldy cakes are a good addition to the garden compost pile You’re either get mushrooms and/ or you’ll be enriching your compost .
By the way , shaking them jars from day one may have prevented that from happening by letting the fungus colonize the entire jar rapidly ,out competing any contamination.
It’s also easier to dump the out after it’s fully colonize when it’s all loose and not clumped up into a singular mass.

On your mono tub tek it says that you have the lid on when youre not at home. Does this mean it’s off when you are?

Hello. Do you have any experience using cracked corn during inoculation? I read in the thread you only use oats, at least now, but if you've dabbled with them I'd appreciate your input on using it.
