Following your Easy AF no PC guide, when do you recommend moving the cakes from jars with plastic bags over them to a shoebox?
If I have 1 1/2 pt worth of cakes, should I prepare 650g of coir still or could I prepare less?
Is 1 1/2 pt worth of cakes enough for a shoebox?
Here is the TEK for reference https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=24981864&page=0&vc=1#24981864

Hey Bod,
First off thanks for all the great info, it’s been invaluable. In my reading you said that for PC agar bottles to have the water up to the level of the agar in the bottle in the PC and to have a larger amount of water in the PC to decrease the chance for boil over. I’ve had some issues with still seeing small amounts of agar in the PC water even with the 3 inches of water in the PC recommended by all american (6 quarts). Could I use a row of jars with a trivet on top to keep the bottles out of the water and also allow me to use more water as a heat sink? Or should I fill my media bottles less fulll? Thanks again for all you do.

Hey Bod, I came across this post of yours in another thread and am curious if you could clarify this method of testing a bit more. I have several active cultures I would like to test.
Can you give any pointers on inoculating these jarred cakes with agar wedges? I noticed further down in the thread you had mentioned sprinkling vermiculite on top of the cakes, and said that agar would colonize it. However, I did this a couple days ago and haven't noticed any signs of the wedges beginning to spread out or colonize the cakes.
Quote:
as for testing cultures quickly. make brf cake mix. put about 1/2 pint into a quart or pint wide mouth sterilize let it cool down inoculate wait a week fruit in-vitro
I realize it has been a few years since you posted this. Are you still using this method to test cultures. If not, then what are you using these days for that purpose?

Hey dude, what are your thoughts on like yellowish tinting on mycelium in rye berries. I had one small one with it, shook it up and like within 48 hours it was wicked white and awesome. The yellowish stuff is starting on the bigger jars too.

It’s been my experience that it’s nothing. It’s just metabolites. The grains are brownish yellowish and it’s moist and SOMETIMES some discoloration forms and is normal and it happens. However, sometimes it could be the result of a contaminate. The only thing that will tell… It’s time. Somebody may disagree with me and I am always open to that. Cultivation is a learning process and I am relatively new. So, the chances of me being wrong are possible. Looking forward to seeing your results. Good luck brother Peace, love, and mycelium, Ergot Ernie

Right thanks. I can't seem to properly upload the pictures but it now looks a lot like Sclerotia inside it. Which is odd because it wasn't a Sclerotia strain.

I have myself a cube called shooting star.
I managed to luck out with some of my mycelium transfers and have an albino version as well as the regular version all from the same sporeprint.
Eventually my goal is to print spores whether its albino or leucistic. In the mean time im keeping the 2 cultures going and have the original spore print.
Can you recommend any links or something to guide me in stabilizing this as spores?
Here is the thread I made to show it off https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27414871

Hi there!
I am definitely a noob but for the last two weeks I have dived deep into this. I already have sterilized agar wedges ready to go. A spore print is on the way (for research). I bought myself a SAB.
I am now preparing for spawns with oats. Can you please let me know if this link is the correct oats?

Thank you

Hi bod, I'm preparing my sgfc and want to know if I need to get some sort of sheet of perlite? It came looking like small grains and I'm worried it will fall through the holes in the bottom. Did I get the right stuff? Thanks

I have a few tubs looking like this with only.6-7 pins showing up over the last 3 days what’s going on,I usually get a nice pinset and half decent canopy, this was agar t-4 I have other tubs from the same plate throwing out flushes with nice canopies,I have the tubs stacked 5 ontop of each other, room is a constant 74f and a fan running I have 10 tubs in total and like 4 are throwing out very good pinset, the rest are like this.

Here are the other decent tubs

Even the goods tubs are growing quite slow, this tub took 11 days to finish from first pin
What can I do to fix this?

Hey Bod and followers of Bod, Im just dipping my toes into agar and getting pretty excited.
Can anyone explain to me why you would ever make a spore syringe and incoulate to agar that way vs using a live tissue sample and cloning? Seems to me that it's easier and less steps (as well as ensuring better genetics) to just clone.
Cheers!

Spores are readily available and easy to find. To clone live tissue, you already have to have live mushrooms or know somebody that does. You can have a clone culture that doesn't fruit well and produces poor yield. In that situation, you'd want to go back to spores and chase down some netter genetics.

Thanks Doc. As another noob question, any big no no's while waiting for plates to colonise? I've just made some clone plates and put them in a tupperware container with the lid on. Is this a bad idea?
Cheers

Are the plates wrapped? If so, there's no need to put them in a container. If the temperature of the room that they're in fluctuates a lot, the plates will get a lot of condensation build up. That makes it hard to see what's going on in the plate but it's not going to hurt anything.

Had success with PF tek in the past and was intimated by cost and risk of contam with monotub. After spending time with your aggregate of links and teks, I'm pumped! Thanks for putting sharing your time and expertise.
