Bucket Tek issues? [Re: bodhisatta]
    #25873358 - 03/14/19 10:07 AM (1 year, 11 months ago)

Hi Bod et al. Am trying bucket tech and it's getting weird right from the start. I can only get coir in a loosely bundled bale like the pic shows. I weighed out 300g, snipped it into 1-2 inch tufts which filled my tote to about 1/4 deep patted down dry. But when I added 1.5L boiling water in an insulated  coolbox, it didn't even half cover the coir and after an hour in the coolbox (preheated with hot water), the temp was only 51 C and the coir was still light brown (the wet parts) and more than half of it was still dry! So now I'm just  'cooking' it in an abundance of water in a pillowcase in a pot on the stove (heated to 90 C, then I turned the stove off) and I'll wring the water out to field capacity once its cooled down. Has anyone else had similar issues?

While here I'll share a lid tek I've tried with seeming success (see pics of colonised grain jars and the ones with new lids being made today). The tek (perhaps well-known here?) is simply 7 layers of micropore. I stuck a length of tape on the countertop and simply sectioned it into 7 with a knife. The lid withstood pressure cooker just fine and is probably reusable even.

Any comments on bucket tek with loose coir like mine will be appreciated.

So even after cooking the raw coir like I did, it didn't turn dark brown. So I turned my attention to a brick of "palm peat" (see pic) which contains coconut coir I believe. I'm wondering whether this is not similar to the bricked stuff on Bod's bucket tek which I see is called "Coco Coir Mix Brick" suggesting something mixed with coir? I'm wondering this especially for the completely unscientific reason that my brick is also 650g in mass. So on this basis, unless someone tells me not to waste my time, I'm going to apply Bod's bucket tek to this brick of palm peat and see what happens. I'll inoculate a monotub of it as well as a monotub of the raw coir prepped as described above. Inoculation will only happen tomorrow, so please, if anyone has other suggestions as to how I should be proceeding with coir, please post urgently! Thanks hopefully not too far in advance!

The palm peat is correct. The stuff in the bundle  might work.

They call coir palm peat to market to people who want peat moss. There is no palm peat its coir but coconut is a palm and Calling it peat is marketing. Hence palm peat something you can sell to people who would say no to coir as an alternative

Hello I'm trying your tek out and I have a question about the FAE that I was confused about. When youre not at home you keep the lid on and upside down. What do you do when youre home? Thanks!

SAF Coir (aka "Palm Peat"), first try - Progress? [Re: drjosh]
    #25897524 - 03/26/19 10:06 AM (1 year, 11 months ago)

Good day Bod and all,

Here's some pics after 10 days. Perhaps you can tell me if it's looking ok or not? No casing used. My substrate certainly doesn't go solid white like horse shit does! But it seems similar to what I've seen in others' pics...? There are lots of tiny water beads between the strands not visible in pictures.

In monotubs this strain takes 2 weeks to colonise, another week to consolidate and begins fruiting in week 4. So I'm being patient. Didn't begin with a huge amount of spawn either. Temp is generally above 23 deg C (73F) in tub above the substrate, a bit lower at night. Should I go to TiT to keep it above 75F?

thanks millions

10 days and no casing that doesn't look good. Should be a solid white block by now even if it was 65F

Oh shit!

Could that be a technical, e.g. moisture, issue or do you think this substrate is not like yours?

My first guess would be the spawn

Should look like this 5-7 days in

Just to be clear Bod, are you saying some strains don't do well on coir? Or that the spawn was weak in some way?  It grows thick and fast on grain I can say.

The one I have is called Thai khoi samui. Mean anything? Others around here I should be able to get are GT and PE. Not sure about PESA, need to ask around...

Any cubensis variety will do just fine on coir. There's infinity strains of any variety. Some khoi will suck some will be awesome. There's nearly endless possibilities for two stores to meet and mate on one print or in a syringe.

My first guess would be the quality of your spawn. From the colonization you got in 10 days I would assume bacterial spawn

I get you.

Someone gave me a bag of sorghum spawn and I just used it. It did not look very heavily colonised to me and there was a patch of reddish discoloration in one small area. It had also sat in the fridge for about a month before I used it. Not good practice I don't suppose...?

I now have 7 well-colonised very clean-looking grain jars I made myself, albeit from the same source. Will try again while I begin from scratch with spore prints I made earlier in the summer.

Obrigado

Im doing a pan cyan grow and want to have a 50%hpoo to 30%coir, 15%verm, 5%gypsum.  Am i counting the coir weight as wet or dry when im making these measurements?

Awesome, thats what I did thanks .  Im going to pc this mix because its my first go and im not too sure how long the manure pile got to dry out.  Is this a concern?

if you sterilize manure you have to spawn to it aseptic and keep it sterile. which means spawning in front of a flow hood. manure must be pasteurized to work with it open air.
