I fucking love this flow chart.
Whenever someone asks how to start growing my head starts to spin with all the options and routes available. This chart basically is a map of what my brain is thinking and wanting to tell the inquirer.

However, a couple posts I've read have talked about bad genetics leading to poor results for first timers, so I'm wondering if there is a way to improve the genetics before I do a full grow, like using agar or a bunch of small grains jars to select for faster growing/healthier mycelium? Is that even a thing? I didn't find much through the search function.
It's not just for first timers.
If you start with multispore you can select the biggest cluster or fastest growing fruit to clone and limit the gene pool.

After inoculation do I just leave them on the shelf covered with petri dish lid without wrapping edges with saran wrap until desired growth? Once I have made enough transfers to produce a nice dish do the edges get wrapped and stored in the fridge for long term storage? How long can a good dish be stored? Thanks.
Your agar needs to cool to room temp and solidify before inoculation.
Wrapping your dishes is recomended.
Once you have a good culture you cut a wedge and use said wedge to inoculate sterilized whole grains and then use the resulting colonized grains to grow mushrooms.
Or you can keep the petri for longer term storage. The recommended method is inside a drink cooler inside a refridgerator. The cooler helps cut back on condensation from temperature swings.

If it looks dry, mist it.
But if you've got pins all over it I don't think humidity is going to be a problem. Youre gonna staet seeing the tub fog up as the mushrooms get bigger.

Has anyone else noticed that the retail price of presto pressure cookers has almost doubled in the last 10 years? I bought my first 16 quart presto for like $70 and I saw them retailing on store shelves today for $150. It's insanity!
