Pressure Cooker Question
    #24418022 - 06/19/17 04:58 PM (2 months, 1 day ago)

Hi Shroomery Community,

I had recently purchased a pressure cooker for the vital role of sterilisation. However, it does not have a pressure gauge but instead a weight looking thing that limits the cooker to 80kpa (11.6psi). Can this cooker still be used for sterilisation even though the recommended psi is to be around 15-18psi? I was thinking of modifying the weight by including more weight to it which should increase psi but was thinking that maybe it's not a good idea to mess around with something that is pressurised.

Thanks any advice would be greatly appreciated. mm

It' not a good idea but neither a terribly bad idea. Does your PC have a secondary valve which is spring loaded? Because some have one-use security valve. If you are going to add more weight, try to let it run outside first and observe from distance. good luck

Yeah it looks to have what seems to be a secondary release valve, I'm not sure whether the extra pressure that I could apply to it will just escape through the secondary valve as that is what it is used for?
Thanks mm

Modify by adding more time to your sterilizing

Thanks for the advice guys, yeah i guess it's best to be safe by just adding an extra 30 than messing around with pressurised equipment haha

Yup.

I believe 10psi is the minimal for sterilizing grain. Dont quote me on that one, but i think so.

So just add more time. 120 minutes would be safe.

I used to use a pc like that and a 2 hour cycle is fine.

Of course, now I use a 15 psi cooker and still go 2 hours.

Put the lid on without the weight, turn on to medium high heat, let the steam escape in a steady flow for at least 3 minutes, put the weight on.
Once the pc rocks turn the heat down a couple numbers and it'll stop rocking for a few minutes and then build up pressure again.  Once it rocks, drop down a couple notches and let it almost rock again.  Start the timer.

The rocker doesnt need to constantly move, just needs to wiggle every now and then.

Or.... You could start low and leave it but it takes forever

Geez that thing is ridiculous! u going full industrial there?

When i PCd in the past, i made the thing jiggle like crazy. Thought that was how u did it. I bet the pressure was higher than 12psi. But it burns up your water reaaaaly fast so use lots of water.
