Yeah, for production you need to go grain to grain. Agar to grain is expensive and extremely slow. Just one expansion off say 10 jars then taking 1 jar to 10 again you have a 100 jars . Large amounts of LC is also an option.

I want to try different subs for my oysters when I get through this bale of straw. I have some access to oak chips, but I can get a shit ton of newspaper for free.
How would I go about using newspaper? Would I just pasteurize like I have been with straw, stuffing it into a laundry bag and slowly bringing it up to temp and holding for an hour then spreading over a screen to cool and drain?

I have almost perfect success with jars. Should I just wait till I get a flow hood to do bags? I really need to increase my spawn production and pint jars are getting tedious.
I've got some half gallon jars that I like for expanding little jars of nice spawn.

Yes you will need to pasteurize it. How are you going to use it? Thick layers tend to suffocate mycelium.

I was going to supplement with coffee and throw in a couple handfuls of verm to fluff it up, maybe at a ratio of 2:1:1 np:c:v?

Is the paper shredded? If so then that sounds like a recipe, not sure about how much coffee you need though.

It can be lol. I'll probably get some bags and do some experimenting. My local paper has a ton of day old news that I could grab, and if I started needing it on a regular I could probably have it delivered.

What about an IBC tote? or a large steel feeding trough. That steel container would make a great sterilizer but damn is it exspensive. check craigslist for your area!

you could set them up like WhatTheFungus on youtube where he has a main boiler that feeds several barrels. I would have them set up for easier loading and unloading though. He is switching to plastic ibc totes apparantly. thats why I mentioned it.

I'm not sure, but I think my Stropharia rugosoanulatta tub is starting to contaminate.
I'm thinking of taking the whole tub out to burry in the snow until thaw. Maybe I can still use it in a woodchip bed.

Pity these poor lion's manes, fruiting in jars in a less than ideal fruiting chamber.
I know the fruits aren't supposed to get wet, so I cover the jars with lids when I mist the chamber (the chamber itself does have a lid).
The question is - can I bottom water the jars or am I better to just let them be? They're just on oats. I did mean to spawn half of them but it didn't happen.
Thanks for looking.

I constantly have a dozen or so lions mane jars fruiting. I put my jars in a sgfc and mist twice a day. I usually fan for 30 seconds in the morning. My only attempts at bottom watering were on birthed jars, they didn't suck up water as quick as they dried out. (Had them in a mini greenhouse for that experiment. They will probably do better in your moist chamber.)
Still procrastinating on getting proper bags to grow some nice softball sized puffballs. They are usually aBout 2"-2 1/2" off the top of my jars

Blocks are the shit
Super easy and the average size of each fruit is 300 or so grams. Next run I'm only cutting 1 hole in the bags cause I noticed that with 2 one fruit grows big and the other stays about golf ball sized. Hopefully 1 hole will mean 1 big fruit!

I wanna sleep on a giant mushie poof ball or use one as a pillow
Is it just me or do edibles get sick from molds way easier than cubes? My spawn is 100% clean but the LM fruits get bacteria then the green on the sub n reishi antlers get the green to.

I've thrown out every type of mushroom. Many of the gourmet or medicinal mushrooms take a really long time compared to cubes to colonize a substrate and start fruiting. There may be more time for your normal flora to gain strength.
Also gourmet mushrooms all have mycelium that behaves/looks different. Sometimes we may be expanding slightly questionable spawn not seeing the signs of less than optimal quality. Some times your plates of lions main are weird because they have company, sometimes they are just being lions mane. Oysters are nice and resilient/fast growing though.

I am new to the world of edible/medicinal and boy am I excited!
I got about 12 qt of red resihi on grain from plug spawn (what a great christmas gift) and damn do they go fast! I thought it was cobweb at first but I've seen similar invalidated concerns from other growers.
I also put some left over oyster plug spawn to coir/verm/coffee grounds sterilized as a phuck-it and put into a grocery bag... took a peak and its fluffing up nicely Curious to see if that works or tams out.
Soon its LC for the oysters to inoculate supplemented (20% bran) sawdust bags and then the same once the LM spawn comes in.
Damn am I ready to eat some fruits of my labor! Also hi everyone
