Depends on how far you want to stretch it. You could easily do two bags with one mqt. I normally add approximately 2 cups per 5.5 lb block though but I’m using spawn bags and not growing excessive amounts.

Alright, as long as it not "bad" with a full quart I do not mind. Think I will do that then so I do not have to PC 4 more bags tomorrow haha.
Inoculating in a 210 liter SAB.. Second time doing so.

I'm new to shiitake so idk what I'm talking about but I have read that less is more when it comes to spawn
I'd be interested to hear more experienced growers thoughts on ratios though because I'm just sort of fumbling about here seeing what works best.
Also what weight would 5 cups of pellets be (non American here)

Im European so I do not normaly use cups either. 5 cups in weight for me is about 1575 grams of HWFP.

No big deal Bum, did not take offence, I'm not that experienced anyway, I've grown them successfully but there are lots more in here with more experience, listen to them!

I don't use cups either, I prefer to use the scales and weigh. It's easier to work with when you know how much you have. For example, 1kg of dry wood + 1kg of water = 50% dry wood, 50% water. Ideally 66% water (if possible).
You can also add additives (including the bran) to the water, since it's been measured.
-----
Here is an example but with soluble fertilizer and tea for nutrients, not wheat bran.

Essentially I made nutritional water, ready to be absorbed.
----
Substrate water content guide
====
Additional notes:
Sawdust, is more like grit (or sand), it's ability to hold water is very limited (it will also produce lots of condensate). Paper pellets, and coco coir, are fibrous. Both water and other materials will bind with the fibers.
Imagine hydrating some rocks or sand, and hydrating a sponge or cotton cloth. Now imagine adding some limestone flour to a cotton cloth.

So if I wanted to add bran to a kg of pellets @10% I could just add 100g of the bran to the water let it steep for a bit and add it that way?
That sounds good, at least you know the nutes are evenly distributed.
On another note i think one of my shiitake bags is starting to popcorn. The rest are starting to turn brown on the top surface and they have had some bumps and bobbles for a while. These ones are just over a month old. So from this point when should I be looking to cold shock / soak and fruit?

Depends on how the 10% is being measured, if 1000 + 10%, then indeed 1000 + 100, else it would be 900 + 100 = 1000, the 100 being 10% of 1000. You can even sterilize the nutrient water prior to adding it, but that's probably overkill, since it should be sterilized complete.
You can mix your wood pellets with either paper pellets or coco coir, and get more water content. Coco coir is more or less another wood type, one even Cubensis can work with.

I've read egg boxes can be used is that right? I've been saving mine for ages and I've got fuck loads now.
I keep forgetting to use them though when I'm making my blocks so they keep piling up. I'm going to spawn some oysters in the morning though so should I soak them overnight or do they just need like half an hour in boiling water?

The paper pellets I use are from recycled egg carton, newspaper, so on. The recycled paper is pulped, strained, and then pelleted. You will need to pulp and then strain it, to be like the pellets, otherwise it's more like cardboard.

Looking good! I wait until the bag is almost completely brown before spawning. i do not cold shock but i just am a bit rough with them lol then take out and spawn. My first shiitakes I did I spawned way to early, was not good. Be patient.

@feather, I have some paper cat litter pellets but I don't like using them. They have a slight perfume smell. They don't smell chemically and they do work, I used them for my gymnopilus. Maybe I could soak them and rinse a few times.
@sunny I think in a month or 2 I'll not need to cold shock either but it's been pretty warm recently. Do you soak them even?

I just put some of the cat litter to soak and had a good look at it. It has like clear gel beads in it, must be to absorb more cat pish or something

@ Bumholio, then those cat litter pellets have additives. Try the brands I use (in the images above).
https://namyco.org/docs/grow_oyster_mushrooms_on_kitty_litter_illustrated.pdf
Look for "chemical and additive free", "recycled", "biodegradable" on the label.
