what do you all use for sealing your fruit block bags? I have an impulse sealer but it doesn’t work well with the folds so one part gets too hot and the other just won’t seal. There a method to it? I’ve just been using zip ties but seems like there could be a better way

Impulse sealer, just lay flat and don't gusset. Hopefully yours is big enough to get it in two seals.

Thanks Quadman. I have a 12”, if I had the 14” I could’ve done it in one go. I kind of thought that might be the answer but I didn’t want to screw up a bag trying.
I’ll be trying it tomorrow! Do a test bag first to get the right setting.

Shit, still not working. Too much moisture and when I turn the heat up it melts the bag. BUT....I tried my vacuum sealer and the bag just fits. It worked good on a wet test bag. Would prefer the impulse sealer but just glad to have an alternative.
Ok, next question, do you all colonize fruit blocks in the light or dark? I’ve read varying opinions. The only thing I’ve really noticed so far is that they can’t be too squished together but I haven’t tested the light theory.

I use zip ties, they I like them because they're so quick and they keep the bag neat.

Zip ties are nice to use in combination with S shaped meat hooks and (plastic) chains hanging from the ceiling.. for a delicious but lame Hellraiser look i guess.
Of course that leaves the question of FAE but not a problem if you already poked holes in the bags.
I was checking out Inkcaps and how the goo may be used as ink, it's fascinating how that deliquiescence works of the inkcaps turning to goo. But i have a lot of questions, like I wonder whether the goo would dissolve other mushrooms' tissue or not. Also am reading a lot of conflicting ideas about the purpose of the deliquiescence.
Anyway nice cluster adas
Hey about spawn jars: how terrible are the twist-off type caps vs the mason jar ones?

I just got confirmation that vanilla extract repels fungal gnats. I suggested using cheap gel air fresheners, or the oil with reeds. They used neem oil and vanilla, as a spray: "I have been spraying with a fine mist of neem oil and vanilla".
Direct spraying caused the mycelium to grow well, but produced slightly more aborts. I would suggest using in-direct air fresheners to start with, if possible.

I think neem oil has some toxicity to humans, I wouldn't use it so directly / spray it.
But that is awesome about the vanilla, will be sure to try that out as an adjunct to biological pest control.

I think neem is used in lots of narural products for your skin, mixed with essential oils. I hope it’s not toxic lol I’ve never used it myself.
That is cool though, will try it. I also just got myself one of these. No gnats right now but I’m ready!

Mosquitoes aren’t too bad here yet but I’ll be trying it this summer I’m sure. Nothing more annoying than trying to fall asleep to the sound of a hovering mosquito just wondering where it’s going to land and bite

So I took 1 quart of spawn to a 5 pound bag of Fuel pellets. (Lion's mane)
I should be able to take the 5 pound block once fully colonized and break it up, take a few hand full and use it to inoculate a couple of more bags of fuel pellets?
Correct me if I'm wrong ?
Might be super obvious too you guys, but not to me lol.
Is there a reason not to go from colonized sawdust to more sawdust once? Guess there is a lot of good stuff in the grains if you would inoculate with those instead.

I got my hands on some low quality (barely visible mycelium) Pleurotus djamor plug spawns. As I don't have log to plug them, I decided to isolate mycelium on agar and then inoculate some jars.
Well, most of my transfers from plug spawn to agar failed, but one looked promising - among Penicillium cultures I could see some hyphae growing from a-bit-pinkish center of growth. I transfered hyphae to new agar plates, but I'm not if it's even Djamor's mycelium. After how many days I should be able to observe pink coloration of mycelium?

You're better off looking for Oyster myc morphology rather than color. If it looks like Oyster myc, you're good.
