What would one want to grow Maitake on? Like if I cloned a wild one and got it to take on some grain spawn would I fruit on straw logs or does that not work, maybe some woodchips? I am figuring since I find them growing off roots of dead or dying oaks that I might be able to get them to grow on oak wood chips.

Id say mix it, straw for a water reserve and oak for the main course.

An important question IMO ^ if a mushroom grows parasitic as well as saprotrophic, does it even matter what kind of hardwood you grow on saprotrophically? I mean: isn't the preference for a kind of tree (like pioppino for poplar) only for parasitic growing?
I'm not an expert but I'd expect the answer to be that for parasitic growth it's more critical that a fungus is well-adjusted to the antibiotics the trees use, but that for saprotrophic growth the composition of dead wood is considerably less critical than that.

I'm growing a bunch of gourmet varieties for the first time. I'm finding I don't have much clue when I've got a good plate. I recently grew several jars of green mold from what I thought was a healthy lions mane culture.
So far I've grown king oyster, lions mane, and I've got reishi on plates. I've also cloned some wild Hericium species and have 4 more varieties on order.
If anyone can point me to a good resource, I'd love to see healthy gourmet plates. Where should I be looking?

Thanks Lemur Lemur, but I've already got a fresh syringe on the way. But, if you have pics of plates you are proud of, I'd love to see.

Lemur, I'm pretty sure even before my own transfers (I needed the practice anyway after a hiatus) the cultures of the Hericium species I got were already monocultured, so I don't think there is a real need to get into sectoring etc with those you got.. or are you tranferring from the invisible edge just to get the most vigor? Either way, seems like an aggressive enough culture (both species) so afaik you'd just want to help it get going and then take it to spawn soon after..

Question for you, what's the best way to go from lc to agar? Every time I do the lc solution just makes a mess in the petri dish. Ends up with some mycelium and lots of shit from the water.

Just use a drop. If you get nice clean growth, keep some cultures and use the LC to inoculate grain. If it’s dirty, clean up the culture with transfers and toss the master LC.

Maybe ham or someone with more LC knowledge will chime in here in a bit with a more informed opinion. TBH, I don’t really use LC, but always put them to agar this way when I happen to receive them.
Nice score Spotter!
