If you are going to try rooting cuttings at least trim off most of the leaves. They will drop off anyway and take moisture when there is no root system which puts stress on the cutting.

What I found with getting the seed coat off is to put some of that jelly like stuff on it that you can add to soil and which holds water on the cap. It comes as a powder or solid. Ideally you wait until it drops off, I keep them under plastic to keep humidity high until the coat drops. If a seed comes up and does not discard the coat or at least make progress in about 3 days after its gotten at least 1" or 2" tall, it will probably die without intervention and you should try it.

If you watch them closely you will see the progress, they grow up, they get near a certain max height and then struggle to get the coat off. If you see green leaf starting to show at the place where the root came out, you should be fine. About 2 or 3 days of that with no progress and I try to remove it myself I have saved several seedlings that way.

I set it up where I can see it without bending way over. I rest my hands on something, what the little pot is sitting on or put something there that will support your hands. I use my fingernails, you want to hook one nail into the seedcoat near the base. If you can also get your other nail in on the other side, great, if not then just use a little tool, perhaps a utility knife blade. With the two nails or one plus blade, gently pull the seedcoat apart left to right. If you pull up you will uproot and likely kill the seedling or tear the top off. This is where steady hands pay off

If you are lucky the whole seedcoat will come off. If not, then the outer coat comes off leaving the inner membrane which also has to come off. I hold it in one hand and carefully cut the membrane with a sharp blade. Needless to say you must be steady so have your hands resting on something while your fingers work. If nothing comes off but you opened the seedcoat some, that may be enough. Give it another day and see if it makes progress. If not go back and finish the job.

My two biggest seedslings have surfaced and reached somewhere in between 1" and 2" and are nearly at the saran wrap... They have made no visible progress to shed them..

I'll give them the rest of the week, then I'm going in with a blowtorch and a crowbar ;p

Edit: yeah I'm going to go with a commercial acidic soil which has already set nutrients and use the ph down as required to keep it all stable and without having to constantly use the ph modifier, the coco ph rates are overly high ands its easier to just use this soil.

Trying a new method of trying to root some cuttings.

Very hard with this variety.

I tried to root the branches I cut off in April. I put them in soil and put in a humidity dome. I did see that after 6 weeks that one of them had two small roots. I sent it to a friend and threw the rest out. I'm betting that pH is a crucial parameter like it is with kratom. I watered them with pH 5 water in the beginning, but I really didn't follow up or check the pH of the runoff.

So these cuttings are still very well alive. And now i changed the water and added a wee bit of kelp extract. Hope it helps it along.

I been needing to trim it for a while. But i do want it to grow into a tree. I can already grab it by the trunk and lift up the pot. May be time to put it into a bigger pot but ill let it recover for now.

The active type of tree im guessing you mean? From what ive read if they dont receive regular plucking they stop producing the alkaloids after a while.

Watch the seedlings, if you see they have made no progress in 3 days then its a good time to try to do it yourself. I forget the name of that stuff which forms a thick jelly when water is added. A bit of that on the seedcoat should help. Sometimes I use a bit of wet peatmoss. My plants are producing berries again, not a lot but some. I have some khat rooting now too

So... I didnt have the time to take proper care of my novos as they were sprouting... I put them in earthworm castings, in an egg carton, with a bag over it for humidity.

Low and behold fucking cobweb! Its climbing the stalk of one of them. I sprayed with h202.

I think the peroxide will do just fine! I'm not too worried, but I'm really anxious to get these guys in pots at this point!

Patience is a virtue... Whatever the hell that means but yeah i get ya. Once they get taller use bamboo skewers to stake them up because they will lean over. Good luck man and keep us updated.

Sorry to hear that, best of luck man   Is your soil well-draining though, and have you taken precautions like pasteurization?

I have the same thing with really clingy seeds, but realized that I read nothing about removing the berries' dry and mossed up flesh to make it easier on the seedlings which seems like an important step?

Two of my seedlings are so tall already though that I also helped to get off the seedhusk itself with a flame-sterilized scalpel. Went real easy and I don't think I did any damage at all - a subtle incision and some fingernail work did it all.
Not looking bad, just a bit premature... I switched from saran wrap humidity dome of the pot to the tapered part of some PET soda bottles sans caps.

I thought one other seedling was looking really pale but turns out it was surfacing upside down, pushing the root out - idiot ;p bent over so it didn't immediately look like it. Obviously I replanted, wetted a few spots that were getting real dry, with rainwater.
I haven't acidified anything though... probably first gonna do a pH check on some of the same soil (meant to plant like the 10th of the 10 berries), see if I need an adjust. I am currently at 6/10 planted but the other berries are mostly still stalling in the moss.

The thought of spider mites marching on inevitably is almost causing me some formication and similar hosophobic fantasies lol
