PC question

I'm no science major, so here goes: has anyone tried using an additive to water { salt, anti-freeze, or something?? } to increase the boiling point to 250F,thereby eliminating the need for a PC? Just curious.

The problem would be trying to fig out how much to add to make it boil at the right temp.

It's been a couple years since I took chemistry, but according to my calculations, you would have to add about 1200 g. of table salt to a liter of distilled water to increase its boiling point to 121C or 250F.  I know the solubility of salt in distilled water is about 360 g. per liter at room temperature and the solubility goes up at higher temperatures, but i don't know if it increases enough to get up to 1200 g. per liter.  As for antifreeze, i have no idea.  Hope this helped a little.

I doubt you can dissolve mroe than a kilogram of salt in water, even if it is super hot, but I suppose its worth a try. Ic an tell youa head of time it won't work, though. At least not with salt.

Even if you would increase the boiling point of water in your pot, this wouldn?t help you, since the effect will be the same as if you put the jars in a hot oven -> you will dry the jars out since the boiling point of the water INSIDE the jars stays at 212?F.

well if in 1000 mililiters of distilled water disolves 360 grams of salt at room temperature ( 20 C degrees ) then on 40 , it should be allready 720 grams , and on 60 C degrees it should be at 1260 grams per liter ...

Thats if it would be linear , but i don't know about that ...
