Invest in some Ninjutsu lessons.

Though it will take quite a while before you get to play with the sharp objects.

learn the facts behind martial arts before you go buy a sword and start hacking things/people with it. The roots of modern and post-modern arts go beyond recorded history, as well as going beyond just brute physical strength... timing>speed

Paul Chen has a line out that is very real forged work... it's done in a traditional manner for the upscale lines and there is a practacle line that includes Katanas and other japanese at a better price... They are hand forged and come almost razor sharp... they will last generation unlike the on you have listed... thats a piece of junk

I bought one for a friend because he wanted a good sword reasonable priced, I honed it and went to town on standing bamboo and a couple of bundles of straw.... it was a well balanced sword with an easy to work with weight I highly recomend them

search terms to use
Hanwei and Paul Chen

he has some others in higher quality like the one I purchased... A Wu Dan in Damascus steel.... I sharpened it to shaving and it still holds an fine edge and I havent knicked it yet!

I would say go for the sword. If you find out martial arts isn't your thing you can always use it as a decoration. If home decor is not your back, I'm sure you could have alot of fun in some tall grass!

Jeet Kune Do is good, and I highly recommend it.. but it doesn't really focus on weapons much. Ninjutsu is good but very intense. Don't expect to just show up and get a ninja uniform and start using throwing stars and grappling hooks.

If you get a sword, get a real sword. One with a real blade, that is real sharp, is balanced, and isn't made out of some cheap mold and shitty metal. Most swords you can buy commercially are for display only, meaning they aren't real swords.

But if you want to get a "practice/starter sword" I recommend getting a wooden sword replica. They are shaped and balanced and weigh about the same as a real sword, but you can't cut your arm off with it. Just about any martial arts supplier should carry them, next to the "rubber training knives" and such.

Since no one really uses swords in combat anymore, it has evolved into a sport. Kendo is "the way of the sword", but not something that really interests me. I would recommend Taiji sword or Ninjutsu.

I agree with shroomism. If you want something to begin practice with, get a bokken. A bokken is a wooden replica sword. The sword that you have shown is great to hang on the wall, but if you are serious about learning the art of wielding a sword, start with a bokken.

yeah, seriously though... if you try and learn on a crappy replica sword, you won't understand the proper balance and get the right feel for it, a bokken is great to learn on, and you can try crazy stuff without fear of slicing yourself open or something.

Always nice to hear from you, shroomism. you seem like a fellow serious martial artist. I just got home from my aikido class. We were practicing knife disarming techniques, and swordwork. Fun stuff.

Jeet kune do or Kendo is good. But get a wood sword first- If yout take a class, you will have to have the wooden ones anaways.

I have a Diasho (Katana and Wakazashi) and they aren't very sharp at all. You can still hurt things and yourself easily swinging one around. I used to when I first got them and I put a few holes in the wall from misjudging distance.

One day I'll get two sharp as hell and lightweight, custom-made wakazashis. Oh, yeah.....oh, oh......oh yeah ::dance::

Good luck.

I studied Iaido(the art of drawing the sword) with a very good teacher for 6 years, and I can honestly say that I still know NOTHING about the way of the sword. I merely learned how difficult it is. There is a lot more to making a cut than you would think. My suggestion is, if you wan't to learn the sword, be prepared to put at least 10 years into it, for the basics. And that is under the supervision of a sensei.

Also, don't start with a real, sharp sword. You will only cut yourself or damage the blade. I practiced two cuts for six months before I was allowed to buy an iaito -a practice sword that is not sharp. I you wan't to buy an iaito a good place is www.tozando.com
Good length (well this depends on school but) is 2.5 or 2.6 shaku.

ninjitsu is totally awesome. it combines martial arts with spirituality, energy channeling, chemistry, anatomy and other biological sciences, acting, espionage, unique and concealed weapons, etc. almost like ancient CIA or something, but better.

it was said that if you ever saw a ninja, you could consider yourself dead. did you know that a lot of ninjas were architechts? they would build secret corridors and such in houses that they built, so they would appear to vanish... adding to the mystique of the ninja.
