Mystery Mushroom.
    #2440269 - 03/16/04 07:13 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Fleshy cap, light beige, sortof skin colored, stalk is flattened and twisty. Cap is dry but fleshy, found in Coquitlam British Columbia, Canada.

Anyone with even a slight idea of what it might be please post, I'm a new mycologist and I'm creating a database of my local mushrooms.

Taking the spore print right now, i'll update with it's color.

Come one now, dude, any mycologist would know that we need to know what the mushroom was growing from

woops. I meant new as in inexperienced mycologist, especially in the field.

It was amongst the decidous and mixed coniferous detritis in the forrest beside a fallen, severely rotted maple. Situated in a humid and damp environment, 8cm tall, cap 3.5cm in diameter, and spore print is a sandy brown.

Conocybe genus perhaps,

It's my best guess, given the spore print, still need to take them under the scope. The school lab isn't open today, nor tomorrow.

Thanks.

Make sure you get a good spore print on white paper.

My first thought is Galerina, but Conocybe is also a good guess.

You'll need a microscope to ID that one to species.

Happy mushrooming!

In fact, it is a PINK spore print, sorry for the error, I didn't pay close enough attention earlier.

No big surprise on the spore print color. To make much sense of it I was having to guess that your photo had a significant color shift.

With a pink spore print it's probably a Nolanea, although it could also possibly be Entoloma.

You don't mention anything about odor. A lot of Nolaneas and Entolomas have distinctive odors. If one isn't obvious, try crushing some of the flesh and sniffing some more.

Nolanea quadrata (=N. salmonea) is somewhat similar, although more orangish than pink. The Entolomas and Nolaneas of the PNW are far from completely described, and there is a pretty good possibility that you have a species that's not in any books any of us have.

Interesting specimen, and nice photos.

Happy mushrooming!

It lacks the annular ring of galerina species -
