There're so many things that can play into this situation that none of us know about...like...
1) did he carry a life insurance policy or pension plan if he worked for a decent company for any length of time that will pay death benefits?
2) How well was he off financially? I can say that he told me he was struggling a month or so ago, that's why I bought a cutting board.
3) He's pretty young so I assume his parents are still alive although I do remember a thread about his mom having a heart attack. Anyway, how well off are they financially?

There are other issues that will need to be answered but the bottom line is to give if you can...I'm sure his Girlfriend and baby girl could use the money somewhere....shit Some daycares charge 4 or $500.00 a week to babysit.
If you can't give money....no big deal...do what's in your heart....these things will work out.Don't beat yourselves up because you can't spare $20.00...like someone said, your words can help tremendously. ShLong was the best of the best at being a human being...I know damn well he'd understand.

You don't need one. You go to a local store and get a one time debit card.

Yeah but you got to give people some time man no need to make so much fuss. Unless I missed it I think your first post on this thread should have been something other than the finances. Bad taste.

I am actually impressed that we raised $400 in one day! Especially since most have never personally met the guy.

That just goes to show what a great dude he really was! To impact that many people's lives through an online message board. And that's what this thread should be about. What a great guy he really was!

It's not about the money, although it will be greatly appreciated by his family.

I would like to personally thank everyone who donated! Y'all are some good souls and it really moves me. And I was just his friend, so I can only imagine what it means to his family.

Thank you all for being a part of this community.

And let's focus on what a great guy Shlong was.

I have my own family to worry about right now (and I'm pretty fuckin worried.) but if there's not a deadline I might drop a little something.

I know if it were the other way around he'd probably give what he could.

Shlong was such a great dude he created this group locally called "walking, talking, and litterhawking". It was a group focused on picking up trash in the community.

Tomorrow after his funeral I'm going to play a round of disc golf at his local course and pick up all the litter because I know Shlong would appreciate that.

It brings tears to my eyes that normally i would be contacting him to join me in a round of disc golf. Now we'll never play again.

RIP Shlong. You will be missed by many.

What? The whole point of the gofundme page, is to help his family cover the cost of his funeral. I don't think it's meant to cover the entire thing. Just a small contribution from a community that enjoyed his presence. I'd like to believe luvdemshrooms comment was directed at the folks that said they would donate if someone started a gofundme or kickstarter, but have not. You're right, shLong would never have looked down on anyone for not contributing financially to a funeral fundraiser. Nobody should feel obligated to donate. It's more for Katie and Opal than anything.

Just because people aren't posting that they donated doesn't mean they haven't.

There's a lot of emotion in this thread. Let's channel it constructively by holding shLong's memory in high esteem.

For those that have contact with, would it be possible to send cards to his family?  Kind words/art can be just as, if not more valuable as cash.

I've been playing around with this idea, but I don't know if it's a good one since I have no way of knowing if this would be a hit and if shLong would have appreciated it...

I decorate knife handles from Asian food stores with artwork, burned in there. Would it be a good idea to set up a thread in the marketplace where I sell these in honor of shLong? I would be taking requests for 10 days, where a pic or explanation can be given of the sort of design that is wanted (artists' freedom applies), a price will be set for each available knife (I would have to check the prices of the knives and what knives are currently available), and I would be taking out the original price plus postage, and the rest would all be going to shLong's family (wife and daughter). If you take good care of the knives, they will last you a really long time, I've had them for several years and the ones I took care of (I used some for crafts, so I kind of butchered them) are still very good. The handles are bamboo, and the types that are usually available are a butcher knife, a longer meat or fillet knife kind of thing (slightly scimitar shaped), and a shorter, very handy, broad bladed skinner type of knife. I'd show pics if the thread was wanted. Could anyone closer to shLong give me feedback on this? We never got a chance to talk, so it would be nice to know how he might have felt about this before I decide to do it.

EDIT: these are some pics of knive handles I did. The last pic is one with the butcher knife (it's actually not really a cleaver, it's more to chop vegetables, but it's got the shape as you can see.. The thickness doesn't allow for chopping bones) in full accompanied with an undecorated small one in full.

That's an awesome idea I think.
I'd be sure to get one if you want to go ahead with this.
Especially since some proceeds will go to helping Josh's family out further.

I cannot speak for Josh, or this community, but I certainly don't think
he would've been opposed to this idea.

And I sure as hell need a good new chef's knife.

Well, a good chef's knife, like in the sense of a good demi-chef, they don't carry. They do sometimes carry a broad long blade type knife that could function perfectly as a good chef's knife.  I don't own that one, but have used it at a friends' house before, and it worked great. I'll drop by the store that sells them and take pics of what they have, maybe bring home one of each for starters, see how many will go... I'd pay for them myself if I wasn't pretty damn broke right now...
