Fruiting in bag - grey/weak looking myc
    #24399902 - 06/12/17 05:32 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

I birthed these about 9 days ago and put them in fruiting conditions yesterday. Cubensis on rye spawned to bulk with hpoo/gypsum/coir

2/3 of the bag looks really weak and is grey-ish and I'm not sure why. It doesn't appear to be contams because when that area initially colonized it looked like perfect myc!!

Any suggestions?

Just because you have good looking mycelium in one area doesn't mean your grow is not contaminated.

I would say you have a contaminated bag there. The aerial mycelium are trying to run away from something. Doesn't mean it won't fruit, but I would not expect much.

Any idea what it is?

It smells exactly like the spawn bag did - like fresh mushrooms from the store

I've spent a long time searching shroomery and google images and haven't seen anything that looks like it

This is what it looked like 5 days into colonization:

Could be bacteria. It takes a bit for the contamination to show its identification features. Did you prep your own bulk sub? Horse poop HAS to be properly pasturized to have a good shot at getting g a good grow. It contaminates easily. You have to really pay attention when prepping horse poop.

Also see some yellowish areas in the pic, which could just be metabolites, but if the mycelium is pushing those out there may be a reason.

Don't throw in the towel yet. Watch and wait, give it some FAE and keep it moist but not wet with some misting. You are about a week away from knowing something. Between 2 and 3 weeks you will probably see some more definite signs.

I bought pre pasteurized bulk sub from a sponsor that has:

horse manure, exotic zoo manure, organic coconut coir, vermiculite, and gypsum

Yea there are some metabolites which I know means it's stressed. They showed up in the past 24 hours when we had a 98 degree day here and it reached 85 inside, so I'm not sure whether they're a response to a contaminant or to heat stress

Yea will just keep giving it FAE which is difficult with a bag that only has a GE filter

Another option to consider would be to build a SGFC, get some perlite and rinse it out and soak it, pit 4 -5 inches perlite in the bottom of the SGFC. Cut the top off the bag to make a shoe box looking "tray" from the bag and put that in the SGFC....

Metabolites could MAYBE be the heat, but if it was 85 F in your grow area for only a day don't think that's enough to stress them to that point with just heat. My bet is there is a contam in there.

How did you spawn the rye? Syringe? Did you prep your rye yourself or buy that also? Dirty spawn is a big source of contamination.....

BTDT - exact same situation as you, by the description of the bulk I think we even bought the same stuff. Anyway, just let them be. Bacteria isn't the end all be all, it WILL effect growth, but unless you get the mean green, or cobweb you WILL get fruits, it just won't be the full potential you COULD get.

I had 4 bags like yours, 2 have fruited well, 1 went to the trash can and one stalled out while the others were pumping out shrooms, 2-3 weeks later and I've got pins in it.

Next time, do your self the favor. Bods oat tek, + bods coir, spawn to shoeboxes. Look up the shoebox thread. It's all retard easy.

You can put a bulk tray in a SGFC? Might try that.. just poked some holes in the bag to increase FAE and 2 hours later the myc already looking less aerial.

Do you think it could be cobweb at all? I could try spraying it with H2O2

Here's an up close

Syringe from sponsor so its MS. Prepped rye myself with a pressure cooker etc. following RR rye tek. I'm a microbiologist so my sterile technique should be good. used a SAB and gloves and iso alcohol and alcohol flame sterilization etc etc

It's not cobweb.

Be patient, watch it grow.

If you are a microbiologist then you should be familiar with using agar.  Tis the way to go

They seem too big to be knots but the myc has started to kinda blob up into circles in some areas. Super small knots are visible along the side and in some of the areas on the top!

Here we are 9 days after the OP

Gonna be harvesting soon - any thoughts on whether or not to dunk a substrate if the pinset is uneven? Most mono tubs I see that are dunked have a super even pinset because they're from agar
