Hi RD, I don't know of any published species or collections of secotioid Galerina so I was very surprised to see this, I certainly did collect it and unfortunately have only seen it one time in one very small area, I check the location every time i'm there but no luck.

If you can make it here for next April-July I will be happy to foray with you:cool:

New Zealand is sure a special place biologically, tons of endemic species. It truly is middle-earth.

Galerina marginata growing from a dead, but still standing, oak. This tree has been host to Pholiota aurivela for three seasons out of the last five.  These are the first Galerina we've seen growing off of it.  I guess the wood is finally getting rotten enough.

Cool thread! I love it. I have a lot of pictures of potentially poisonous Amanita and Cortinarius, but the toxicity of Australian mushrooms seems largely unknown, so I can't really post 'em. Here's an obligatory Galerina marginata pic.

Pretty sure this one is toxic, a Pholiotina.

I'm quite positive it's an Amanita, assuming it is
deadly!

Hey inski, yes I am in Australia. Thanks for the correction - I think you are right. My apologies to the OP. -_-

Have a Galerina picture.

Great thread! First time I've come across this one, but pretty sure it's Galerina marginata. Anyone know what the mushroom on the left in the second and third pic is?

Dunno, those vein-like gills make me think it's something else...also was not growing directly from wood like the others. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My pretty angel of death and my pretty friend. Which is which and why? I wouldn't eat either despite one of them being edible just because it's too uncomfortably close.

Friends or foes? Which is which and why?
