Let's talk about Supplementing HWFP bags

Hello everyone.
I've been looking for wheat bran and i'm unable to find it locally, which i found surprising since i'm in a very rural area.
I asked about wheat bran, oat bran, bran meal (dunno what that even is) and rice bran everywhere i called.
The store closest to me has rice bran, in pellet form, but its 37.99 for a 40lb bag.
I can find wheat bran online, amazon i'm finding cheapest around $2/pound with free shipping, but shipping times are iffy.
A place in california has 40lb bags for 20bucks, but its another 50 bucks for FEdEX to ship it to me.
So... is $.99/pound my best bet? Or surely i could get similar results from something else nearly as nutritious.
I've been searching threads on the subject but most are specific. i.e. - Can i use flour instead of wheat bran? no because brans are the outside nutritious husk we are after is the answer i hear.
So what would be acceptable and cheaper?
I can make wild bird seed flour pretty darn cheap. Bags of WBS around 8-10 bucks or so.
buying rice (brown rice) in bulk would be cheap, and making BRF, its mega-nutritious.
I'd prefer something already made to save all that wear on my spice grinder though, i really like that thing.
I'm currently a cup of gypsum and sterilizing.
Anyone know any better deals online? Thank you

If there's a tractor supply near you they have stuff like alfalfa and beet pulp pellets. And feed wheat is $8 a bag here, they should have whole grains at most feed stores. Soy hull is what I use for oysters.

Tractor supply in my area carries wheat bran. Check at a horse feed store (tack store) most places that sell livestock feed have it.

That's what I kept reading that feed stores would have 40lb bags for about 10 bucks but one place I called said "it's getting hard to find ( wheat bran) so we carry rice bran now"
The other 2 didn't have anything. There is a tractor supply an hour away I'll give them a call and hopefully I can pick up something appropriate the next time I'm out there anyway. Now I have several more names of items to look for too.
People sure did learn they can make money with their sawdust and grains online to people who have no idea what they're doing huh? It's crazy out there, I'm pretty sure I saw some "premium organic hardwood" sawdust for $10/pound individually wrapped nicely. Surely filling a need for some niche project or experiment I don't know about.

Called the tractor supply an hour away, they don't have any but they do have rice bran for 27.99 for a 40# bag of pellets.
They recommended a feed store out past them, called them, they said they can get it for me and put it on a truck, I got all excited as he looked up the price. $22 for a 50# bag, the excitement didn't last long. However. He has 1 bag of rice bran left, 40# for 8 bucks.
I am soooooo confused now. I'm gonna ask him what the difference is between his 8 dollar rice bran and everyone else's 27 to 37 dollar bags.

True, just having a hard time believing that price difference was all markup, wow.
In other news, they close before I get off work so it will be a little while before I can make it for that single lonely bag lol oh man.
From what i gather I can add just about anything nutritinal So for now I guess I'll just find stuff to add on the fly and have fun with it. Keep notes, until I can get my hands on a bag locally.

Well many of the commodities we use are waste. Price is what ever the market will pay. Busch brewery contracts the Brewers grains to a company just because they have to move it.There is no storing unless you dry it. That isn't economical. If demand drops it can be bought for trucking plus a little. Cottonseed hulls , etc it is something that has to be disposed/ sold. All secondary to the primary business. Therefore price is subjective.
It would be the same if you could develop a market for your spent mushroom blocks.

The guy buying my shiitake blocks used to charge $1 each for them after 1 flush.
I am working on a lead for rice rejects from a mill where they are FREE by the truckload!

Drake , that's cool, There are opportunities out there. We raise lots of wheat and can get screenings but they are highly variable and quite a few weed seeds.

Yeah well luckily there are still places to buy them at 10 bucks for 50 pounds at the same point in time they're selling 1 pound for 10 bucks wrapped up pretty.
I found 50# bags of whole oats for 12bucks and 50# bags of rolled oats for 16 bucks.
Thoughts on usage?

I wouldn't use rolled oats they will release to much starch. Go with whole.

The expensive sawdust is probably sold for smoking meat for a hobby.
What are rice rejects? The hulls? Free is always a great price.

Anyone using supplements that isn't bran or soy bean hull? Beet pulp, cottonseed meal, soy bean meal, corn gluten, corn meal, kelp meal, pelletized alfalfa...
I did a run of hwfp and alfalfa pellets @30%. My king and gold oyster liked it the most. However bran seemed to run better.

MorePies - looks like from here on out I will be using things besides wheat bran and soy hulls.
I just picked up a bag of rolled oats, I'm gonna be doing some bags at 20% and 30% of that mixed in next to a non sup control bag or two, I've been saving up cardboard for a while now, my personal dream is to eventually only grow for myself with my own waste, coffee grounds, cardboard and sawdust, all the waste paper from the mail, etc., in fact I'm getting a 5 gallon bucket full of birch sawdust every day right now in my garage, major remodeling going on at my house right now, it's all being saved.
I obviously am too new to contribute any knowledge right now but I guarantee I'll know some weird off the wall stuff a little down the road. I love the experimenting.

While on subject - why isn't brown rice flour popular? People in the actives section make it sound like the most nutritious stuff ever (mega healthy for humans too) and it doesn't require PCing for some reason (no endospores?)
I'm trying to learn to enjoy brown rice for health reasons, not an easy thing to do at first because it tastes horrible, but if I ever learn how to prepare it well I'll always have it around. Grind some up into a f up of flour when I need it to sup a bag.
I'm gonna run some bags with brf as the only enrichment, and I'm gonna do some combo bags maybe oats and brf, all oats, all brf, throw some gypsum in some. Write everything down
