I have a question. Ive bought a 1950s house (clay pipe) about 6 months ago and have already had to snake my main/cleanout twice. I have a very large tree about 20 ft from the pipe going to the street. Ive never pulled up roots but it slows to a stop in about 3 months trending shows. My storm water/sewage are connected which amplifies the issue.

Planning on putting a camera down here soon to get a better judge.

Should sleeving the line be an option or is that more of a bandaid?

I dont want to dig it up and replace since the cost would be around $12k.

Any thoughts or advice would be great!

terracotta pipe can have all sorts of issues.  when it comes to trees usually the roots go out as far as the branches.  it can also be possible you are having shrooms growing where the point joint together.  shooting a camera would be step one then make an informed decision.  a major problem with buying old houses is getting old plumbing.  it might be worth looking at what kind of pipes you are drinking from too.

Hey! Ya I know old houses can be a lot of fun. Yes the tree roots can get into those old pipes where they join together very easily. The old clay pipes tend to  also partially collapse over time. Only way to tell for sure like you guessed was to send a camera down the line or measure it out from the snake cable you send down and dig down. If it was partially collapsed the dirt close to the pipe would be quite wet. Depending on how cold it gets in the winters where you are would determine the depth of the pipe ( ex:Michigan probably 4-6ft ). There are companies that will pull a new seamless plastic sewer pipe through the old one ( I think it's quite a bit cheaper than digging up your whole lawn).
Maybe you'll get lucky and find out its on the city/towns part of the line
Good luck man.

Mushrooms in my drain pipe? I hope your joking. My influent water is some of the best in the nation (hamilton, ohio) as well as a depositing water.

Its not on the city property unfortunately. I had the city come out the first time and feom how deep the snake is when it becomes unclogged is roughly 20ft. From my house (my pipe)

i've seen them in vodeos.  could be shrooms, plant/tree roots, collapsed pipe or someone did something really stupid putting the pipes together.  you never know until you shoot the film.

Hey saint, cool of you man.

Question - have you used pex?  Like it, if so?  What do you think about using the blue pex that comes in a roll, stretching out and using it for air, like up to 150psi?  Thanks man!

Yes I've used pex before. Awesome pipe for water.
Not sure about using it for air.
It should say the psi rating right on the pipe
Don't see why it wouldn't work as long as it's rated for the pressure

It has been working great for the air.  I think the pex is rated for 150psi that we used.  We keep ours at around 100 unless the product gets too thick or clogs pipe.....
