Casing
    #2436363 - 03/15/04 09:05 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Alright im working on my first batch of shrooms. Ive got 12 jars which are about a week and a half into colinization. Ive got good patches of mycelium all over the jars. It will probably still be a couple more weeks until anything is done with the jars but i want to make sure ive got everything planned out before the first jar is ready to go. I plan on casing half and then just keeping the other six in cakes since i am still new to this. I was just wondering though does anyone recomend a certain casing technique over the other or does anyone have any tips. And when sterilizing the pans and verm what temperature do i cook it at and for how long. Appreciate it everyone.

casings only need about 90-92%rh and cakes need 100%rh...a good casing method is the 50/50+ tek

Like dillinger said, i suggest you tweak your terrarium to get little less RH for your casing (around 90%). It will still work just fine if you put your casings and cakes in the same terrarium with near 100% RH put keep in mind that a casing layer is easier to contaminate than a colonized cake and mold loves very high RH.

Now, as a casing layer recipe, I suggest you go with coir. Simply mix 60% of expanded coco coir (with hot water) to 40% vermiculite (roughly, ratio is not that important). Now, when you squeeze the casing material in your hand, having only a couple dropplets of water shows that your water ratio is fine. Put the casing material in a microwavable container and nuke for 5 to 8 minutes. Remove the container, shake a little bit with a clean spoon and nuke again for another 5 to 8 minutes. Let cool and your casing material is ready. No need to add any PH buffer like most other casing recipes, that's why I like this one, and it works great.

Cleaning your casing pan with some isopropyl alcohol 70% or higher will be just fine.

A bottom layer of sterile wet vermiculite is also useful with casings but not necessary.

Now, hit the faqs here on shroomery. Plenty of good infos...

.fs.

well im using perlite for my humidity technique. Will that work fine with casing or can i really only use that for cakes. I guess i could let the terranium air a couple times a day. And fish are you saying i need to nuke the broken up substrate?

Perlite only setup will give you 99%-100% RH.  That will be fine for your cakes and casings.  Just fan 3 times a day and it will be enough.

Everything mentioned previously was how to prepare and sterilize your casing layer.  Don't nuke your substrate unless you feel like ruining 1 months of hard work
