Russula aeruginea?

Found this mushroom behind my house on the edge of a small wooded area. I'm in northern Florida. The cap is green and slightly sticky on top. It broke apart very easily. The gills are attached to the stalk and don't excrete any latex when damaged so it's not a Lactarius.

It seems like a fairly easy ID but I just want to see what a trusted identifier has to say!

It certainly looks right. Another couple tests you should try are:

1. Peel the cap cuticle from the margin to see how far toward the center it will easily peel. R. aeruginea should only make it about halfway.

2. Take a small piece from the edge of the cap (about the size of a fingernail), put it in your mouth, and chew on it for about 30 seconds. Then spit all of it out. You're trying to see if it's bitter or like hot pepper (if it tastes like one of those you can stop chewing and start spitting). R. aeruginea should not be bitter or like hot pepper.


For future reference, it's also important to know what kinds of trees a mushroom is growing near. Every tree that's close enough that it could hit you if it were cut down needs to be considered. At a minimum you need to note if they are conifers (pine, spruce, fir, etc.) or not. If both kinds are present then you should note that.

Thanks so much for the response, Toxic! I had thought I mentioned that the wooded area is mixed but it contains mostly deciduous trees with a few scattered coniferous trees but it appears I must have been distracted. Whoops!

Went out and picked up the chunks of the mushroom (I ripped it up pretty good already so I can't do the tear test) to consider tasting it however, and this is nothing against you and your knowledge on the subject, I couldn't bring myself to put it in my mouth. I know it's safe but it takes me a few solid finds of the same species in question before I get comfortable with some of the more intimate testing methods.

Thanks again though! I've known and hunted morels ever since I could walk but my family didn't know much about other varieties of mushroom so I've decided to start learning about them myself.

EDIT: I ended up tasting a small bit about 10 minutes later. It was very plain and had no spice or bitterness to it.

With tasting, remember to spit out everything at the end. I've been doing it for years without problems, other than the occasional really bad or exceptionally hot one. Ben Woo used to say that a glass of wine was really good for washing away any bad flavor.

I limit my tasting to specimens where tasting them is an important character for identification, and never taste anything that you know is potentially deadly.

If tasting them in the field, do limit yourself. There is a known case of somebody getting sick after tasting something like 40 specimens in a single day.

Even under story plants are important according to mushroomexpert.com, it seems like alot,but the more you research, the better. Read, read and read some more. It will all start to make sense.

Oh yeah I definitely know to not just run around tasting everything I happen to find. Especially if there is a particularly toxic lookalike that what I'm looking at could potentially be.

I've been reading what I can online about different things I'm finding in my area. Anything you guys might recommend I check out reading wise?
