I wrestled over putting these pics in the Growlog area or here. I figure since this isn?t going to be a growlog and these are gourmet edibles here is an appropriate place; and I suspect the pics will be better appreciated here:
Considering the turning season, the stress of moving the logs, and last nights rain I am expecting some fruitings this week. I?ll wait awhile before I start soaking so I don?t immediately overload myself.
As a few of you know, I?ve been negotiating to purchase part of a shiitake farm. Well, this weekend I purchased 220 X 1-2yo logs and hauled them 100+ miles to my "laying yard".
I would rate the labor intensity of climbing mountainsides to load logs 1 at a time for 4 hours at 7.5 moderately heavy to very heavy. Hauling hay and chopping/hauling tobacco are about the only harder farm labors I?ve experienced. It was much easier to unload into my relatively flat "laying yard".
I had initially planned to build leaning rails out of lumber. This would prove to be rather expensive and not very versatile. The use of chains is cheap considering the durability and overall versatility. The chains can easily be tightened, moved, etc. Of course, using the existing trees as supports cut down the costs considerably (not to mention providing shade). I spent right at $150 on >100? of chain, eyebolts, bull clasps, and support stakes. Installation was quick and the setup proved to be reliable.. so far.
Behind the 2nd pic but not really visible are ~40 more logs stacked or leaned against an adjacent structure (too short to bother placing on chains). Also, there is approx. 1500ft2 of additional space for soaking and/or expansion.
The white dusty stuff on the ground is pulverised lime powder to repel slugs.
