2 hospitalized after eating poisonous mushrooms
    #24328714 - 05/18/17 01:58 AM (4 months, 5 days ago)

May 17th, 2017

Freeland, Washington-

..Two adults accidentally poisoned themselves on May 9 by eating mushrooms they picked on their property. Moffatt said the adults could be described as mushroom “experts” who had foraged the fungi on their property for years.

It is unclear if the patients were foraging for edible mushrooms or psilocybe mushrooms, which are known for their psychedelic properties. They’re also known as “magic mushrooms.”

Some mushrooms can be fatal if digested.

“People need to be really careful,” Chief Rusty Palmer said. “When it comes to mushrooms, people need to be abundantly sure that they know what they’re doing. I don’t know much about them, but there are some that look like other safe and edible kinds of mushrooms.”

If they were after the straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) for eating then it could have been the death cap mushroom, Amanita phalloides, it is commonly mistaken for edible mushrooms. It is off season but wet weather is known to speed up their cycle.

You really can't tell the difference between the two and to make matters worse the death cap looks, smells, and tastes delicious.

If they are really "mushroom experts" then it could've been amanitas that were not properly prepared. Maybe they dropped the ball on prep. I'd say it's more likely they aren't experts and just ate some random edible looking shroom they found with little to no effort put towards confirming an ID.

That's strange they look, smell and taste delicious, I never knew that.  You would think they would put off an off putting taste and smell to prevent animals, and humans for that matter, from eating them.  Seems like the species would survive longer like that.  Maybe animals know the difference and is off putting/ dangerous smelling to them that humans can't comprehend as dangerous.

I don't know a whole lot about that kind or stuff but I do some research on it and it is something that's alway interested me.  How animals and plants have been able to stay alive for so long.  I find it very interesting finding out how different plants and animals use different techniques to protect themselves and/or continue to keep the species alive.

I don't know if you could call them "experts" if they didn't have 100% species level identification.
