Odd yellow color mycelium. What is it?
    #24318467 - 05/14/17 09:16 AM (6 years, 10 months ago)

Hello all, I've been along time lurker and accomplished a BRF cake grow thanks to this forum. But I jumped the gun after my previous first success and cased rye in coir and verm.

Anyways, I was wondering about the blue container in the picture attached, is it starting to overlay? Does it look healthy? Note: I didn't put any verm in the blue container ( I did for the clear container though ) , it contains one quart jar of rye mixed in with about 2 cups of coir. I estimated the amount of coir, not accurate to the T. The reason for that was my last jar took a little while to fully colonize so I cased the rest and just made a little tub with the extra rye. :sun:

I introduced the blue container to fruiting conditions about 6 or 7 days ago and the clear container 3 days ago..  Also some of the myc isn't as bright of white as it was, i'm wondering if that means anything either..

That's unfortunate.. Any assumed diagnosis?

And i'm assuming you're referring to the blue tub? or both?

I just realized that I didn't put a top layer of just coir in the blue tub so those little yellow things are rye seeds, I was in a hurry that day..

Casing isnt the problem its not necessary some do it as it gives more even pinset but it wont ruin your grow not to use a casing. The yellow patches are what im looking at it looks like a tub thats about to change colour is that a big hair in the blue tub?

The coir I used had a little stringy substance in it, I remember it being an organic coir.

I'm still pretty baffled at the way its going a long.. I did find a post about a user having yellow mycelium but it doesn't really look like the pictures I posted, the yellow in mine is much milder and if you look closely almost looks as if it surrounds individual rye seeds just underneath the mycelium in the blue tub..

Nothing perplexing about using contaminated spawn to start a bulk tub

True, I guess time will tell..

I will try and remember to update with results whether it fruits or completely contams. It was completely colonized when I put it into fruiting conditions. I followed Damion5050's Elementary Coir Tek. Let colonize for 10 days etc.

Thanks for the speedy replies.

Just an update for whoever is frantically looking for the information I once was.

I threw the blue tub out the very next day after I posted this. It started looking fuzzy as you can see in the above picture and I figured it to be trich from what I gathered through researched.. I didn't want to contaminate my space so I used prevention and threw it away; which seemed reasonable at the time but I could have waited to verify..

AND the clear tub is pinning.. The yellowish discolor is from over humidity/standing water from what I researched.. I spread some verm over it and on the sides where there was some water and it looks better..

I think I figured out why it happened though, I didn't pasteurize the blue tubs coir; the spawn was fully colonized but I introduced it to fae 3 days after I cased it.. It was a small loss so no big deal.

If my first flush is anything to be proud of i'll post for boasting's sake.

Coir doesn't need pasteurization it will not contaminate unless the spawn wasn't clean

just let them go and see what happens before you do anything rash. Even if there are some problems you will still have some success. Contamination is the name of the game when you grow mushrooms , that is , it is a fact of life while going after clean cultures.

Well here is the final product  but they're only growing to be about 3 inches tall, any ideas why?
