Mycelium Journey's End?
    #2431509 - 03/14/04 03:59 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hi guys,
Well, my PF jars have been incubating for 4 weeks now, and i haven't seen any growth in the last week... It seems the mucelium has become very dark and grey, and the cakes have shrunk inside the jar where the mycelium has gone like this. Also, there is lots of water on the inside of the jars, just rolling around the surface. Is my incubator too hot?

Does anyone have any idea what could have happened to my cakes? I'm thinking of just birthing them anyway, cutting the uncolonized vermiculite off the cakes, and seeing what happens...What do you reckon?

Many thanks,
Enzan

Are the holes still coverd? Dark and gray? Sounds way more like a contam. What are your incubator temps? Can't tell you if it's to hot without them.

Well it's difficult to tell, as the jars are in on a towel on a heat pad, buried in Polyfill... According to my therm it's about 75, but it's way hotter than that in the polyfill- more like 90F... The holes are open, and the jar lids are unscrewed slightly. The greystuff is where mycelium used to be, and looks just like it- like it's dead or something...

Chuck the uncolonized part and dunk the rest of the cakes
for 24 hrs in the fridge. You can try to save the mycelium
from a bad end... I had a cake near grey, I dunked it and
now I'm waitin' for pins

Ok, maybe I'll give that a try... Do i then return the dunked cakes to the jar, or stick em in my terrarium and wait for pinning? Why does this work?

Again, thanks,
Enzan

If it works it's because the cakes got to dry. 90 is to high, tighten the lids and leave the holes uncoverd.
