The sweet spot for supplementation for shiitake 75 and most other finicky shiitake strains
is around 1/3 of a cup of bran per 6lb (hydrated) sawdust block.

As for grain spawn you can use whatever you like, WBS, wheat, rye, millet etc. When you
are using just grain spawn it acts as the supplementation for your mycelium to disgest. When
adding grain spawn to a supplemented block you want to add enough for quick colonization but
not so much that it affects the level of nutrition that is available for the mylcelium causing mutants and other problems. RR uses a 20:1 ratio if I remember correctly when spawning
to supplemented bags.

I do not have much experience working with supplemented sawdust so I do not have much information
on what the exact sweet spot would be.

If you take a look at my S75 grow journal you should be able to find exact amounts. Like EM said, the range is generally about 1/3 cup to 1/6 cup of bran for S75. I found that there were actually better results when I used 1/3 cup of bran and about 100 mL of grain spawn.

My experiments were with 16 blocks of S75. Unfortunately, things got crazy over the summer and I was hard pressed to take care of them. The experiment ended up being impossible for me to document the results in picture form and only about half of the blocks were actually documented in terms of colonization times, fruit yields, browning %, and total time till fruiting.

Great thread. About to dive into shiitake production, and need some clarification on the 75 strain (the only culture of shiitake I presently have). There seems to be two factors at play here, if Im undertanding what I have been reading on this page & others.

1. Too much bran supplement in sawdust is a bad thing
2. Too much spawned grain is a bad thing

So, wheres the ultimate sweetspot, weight for weight? Or at the very least, a guideline for a new starter to the genus.

I'm assuming I can use WBS or wheat for my initial spawn? Can this be supplemented sawdust as well... thats tthe impression I get from Stamets.

5% bran supplementation & 20:1 spawn ratio.  Use millet (WBS) or Milo for the spawn.  Rye will work also.

Watch the VVVVVV gets a free wedge thread! You might get lucky and catch a few more Shiitake strains soon.

Cheers for the great replies, this gives me something to work with. Time to get some S75 mycelium running onto agar today !

Unfortunately, OIC, I'm a long way from the US, so need to rely on local growers for swaps, freebies etc. I have already collected a few varieties (four pleurotus sp.), so as soon as I can get them onto slants, I'll put a shout out for my fellow countrymen.
