I can sell it for dollars. That’s all I care about.
i get that. i trade. i'm in it for the money more than the tech.
but there is something to be said for governments not being able to physically stop crypto transactions aside from maybe shutting down the internet and resources to make power
There's a lot to be said for the censorship resistant nature of crypto. I would contend that the only reason crypto is "a thing" is for that very reason. And yes, masses will glom on with hopes for the get-rich-quick theme, stalwart powers that be (i.e. conventional governments) will do everything they can to regulate and control this new asset class, and the early boarding on the ship is very likely complete. Nevertheless, the fact that crypto can be so (comparatively) censor resistant, lightweight and universal, is why it won't be going away.
At this juncture, while I do believe that it can still appreciate in relative value, I believe its predominant worth is in advancing the technology of money as a basic tool for humanity and self-sovereignty. I am firmly split 50/50 at this point, which is to say that I see equal potential in the motivation of holding crypto as an investment class asset, as I do in holding it as a capital allocation for preservation of value; which is, interestingly, the space that gold has historically held throughout most of human history.
I hold some precious metals as well, but in truth, I would much rather contribute additional capital toward my crypto holdings over metals in this moment of time. It just makes sense. It's so easy to secure, it can be sent anywhere in the world almost instantly, and properly designed and decentralized networks (not all are) can't be fucked with easily by outside powers, with the notable exception of on/off-ramping to fiat. The beauty is, that as adoption increases, on/off-ramping to fiat will become less of a necessity.
I honestly cannot conceive of a moment amidst the rest of my life where I will not hold a significant allocation of my net worth in cryptocurrency... barring universal catastrophe where traditional services/utilities go offline, but if we face that situation, no one is going to give a lot of fucks about money anyway. I also admittedly chuckle at the idea that if our technology gets stymied, that a modern human would readily move toward a precious metal based barter system. With how developed our society is, I just don't see that happening, like, ever.
A modern human could look at a chunk of gold, and in essence, consider it little more than a shiny rock. I was at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles this afternoon with my family, and they have piles of gold on display in their gem room... and yeah, no real awe and wonder there, just another element. In an apocalyptical scenario, in particular with how good counterfeit and lookalike materials can be constructed with modern technology, why the fuck would I want to use a gold rock as a tool for barter? I wouldn't. I wouldn't be able to verify its authenticity, it's heavy and hard to transport, and in the shit-hits-the-fan-scenario... we all know what people will want to trade for (i.e. food, water, munitions).

Definitely possible to eventually crack existing currencies as they are, but by the time you have quantum computers that powerful you'll be using quantum computers to encrypt things as well. If any major currencies become at risk they will inevitably be forked into a new coin that can resist cracking, and will likely do so through quantum computing services well before any computers are powerful enough to actually crack any.
Basically encrypting things is far more energy efficient than cracking them, so as technology evolves you can get ahead of it before it becomes a problem.

It takes many to make a market, and there is no one trading style that will succeed above all others all of the time. The most important thing in trading, is knowing what's behind your eyeballs. Which is to say, knowing yourself, honing the methodology that works best for you, recognizing when the market is in favor of your methodology and pressing, as well as scaling back in size and scope when it is not. As anyone trading long enough might tell you, the market will humble all but the most resiliently fierce of egos. I appreciate the spirited discourse between different styles of trade here, and just wanted to chime in to encourage everyone to keep it real amidst those instances where we may have to agree to disagree.

There are no serial numbers stamped on any of my ledger devices, and I haven't noted any that are visible in the software either.
Sending crypto from an exchange to another wallet that is in your sole custody is not considered a taxable (or tax write-off-able) event. Of course, if you want to try to claim the capital loss under the guise that you don't hold custody over the recipient wallet, you're going to have to be pretty careful about how you handle the chain of transactions after that point, because not only are you trying to avoid paying tax on a potential longer term gain, you're double dipping on the fraud by attempting to claim a loss up front.
You are likely to have a hard time laundering your eventual withdrawals from the ledger wallet through a crypto ATM, as these ATMs require at least a phone number to verify your identity, and many will require more invasive personal information. Further, the withdrawal limits are unlikely to exceed $10,000 and the fees the ATMs take will probably be around 10%, which kind of defeats the purpose of trying to avoid the tax in the first place.
Generally speaking, it's preferable to just pay the tax man and sleep easy at night.
