What's everyones thoughts on the halvening? Personally I think its a little worrying. Right now BTC derives a lot of its security by paying miners from block rewards, as opposed to fees. The more halvenings that pass, the lower the block reward gets and as such miners need to be compensated by an increase in fees.
This diagram is pretty interesting. There needs to be a serious increase in BTC usage within the next 4 years, otherwise the next halvening will be a serious dent in BTC security.

geokills said: Just a quick post to note that BTC volatility has contracted significantly. At around 4%, this is about as tight as I've seen the bollinger bands get. Volatility is cyclical. Traders should be ready for a big move, when a base is built this tightly, the subsequent breakout is typically very fast with a lot of follow through.
Specifically, this means that if you have a large trading position in BTC, you should exit or at least lighten up significantly if price breaks to the downside (conservative traders could use $9K as their stop, but I think $8,800 is more appropriate given the generally higher volatility of this asset class). A move above $9,500 would be an initial buy signal that should quickly test resistance at $10,000. A move above $10,350 would be a secondary buy signal, and $10,500 would be, in my view, the last level of resistance to surmount before a big move higher.

$9000 support has held and we are starting to see what looks like an upside breakout in BTC as price has broken above $9,500 and is marching along the upper and expanding bollinger band. My only problem here is that volume is fairly pathetic and we haven't actually broken out of the trading range of the past three months, even as we are starting to breakout of the volatility squeeze. I would want to see trading volume spike significantly higher to increase my confidence in an attempt to blow through $10,000.

Ethereum on the other hand, is in the midst of a bonafide breakout, with good volume and an impressive multiday run off of its 20 day moving average, with consistent closes above the upper and expanding bollinger band. Hard to buy now, as we are spot on testing the February highs and one would expect some measure of a pullback here before continuing higher... but if I didn't own any, I could even get behind starting a small position right here (in a perfect world, you would buy it on a ~10% pullback to around $260). As I noted on July 6th, "Ethereum is still the most technically and fundamentally interesting to me right now."

Tezos has a really sloppy chart, likely on account of it being a much thinner market than BTC or ETH and thus subject to increased volatility. Nevertheless, it is firmly above $3 and hopefully getting ready to continue higher to test its February highs just under $4. If BTC and ETH continue to expand, I would have a hard time believing that XTZ won't follow suit, and because it is a relatively underowned asset with a thinner market, it should produce an outsized gain relative to the two aforementioned majors.

On that high note geokills, I just logged onto Coinbase after not doing so for months and my portfolio definitely increased
I decided to trade my small amounts of ZCash, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin to Bitcoin. Bitcoin has been on the up-trend for awhile now, Im hopeful its gonna keep growing into next year. It was my first Crypto I bought and its here to stay for me.
These are the crypto-coins I still have money in:

"Real world implications" sounds broadly vague. The example I provided of buying a dividend paying stock doesn't have any more of a real world implication that buying bitcoin, unless you are buying directly through a secondary issuance by the company (in which case you are financing them). In practice, the vast majority of retail stock trading is done on a secondary market that doesn't have any direct affect on the underlying company or its ability to conduct business.

Like I said I do like the implications of crypto. Inflation is driven by people wanting more money and the government trying to balance the needs of people with the supply so there isn't either too much money or too little. And you would take that check away?
The ability of our central banks to leverage economies into vast amounts of overspending, thereby devaluing the currency at an ever quicker clip, is not what I would call a "check". I can recognize that an elastic money supply sounds good in theory, but in practice no government has been able to responsibly manage it over a long enough period of time, as is being made clear with our modern economies today.

Quote:
The real reason billionaires like Bitcoin is greed. If they amass enough of it they can do away with these controls that serve public interest and rake in even more billions. What do you think billionaires do with their lives? What is their primary motivation? Are they trying to be remembered for helping children? Maybe making the world a better place? Revolutionising healthcare to reduce suffering? No. They are out to fuck anyone who gets in their way so they can make their obscene piles of cash even bigger. Anything billionaires want is by default bad for the rest of us.
I don't buy it. Yes, extreme greed exists. But there is nothing inherently wrong with taking advantage of the capitalist system that we are a part of. Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of asshole billionaires out there, just as I'm certain there are plenty of asshole poor people, just as there are greedy selfish assholes among every financial class between the two extremes. On the other hand, there are also plenty of billionaires who recognize their windfall and want to promote a healthier use of their extreme fortune. See The Giving Pledge.

Gold is a physical tangible thing that has many applications from jewellery to electronics to trading. It doesn't rust and it got excellent properties. It's a marvel of nature.
And bitcoin is a marvel of technology. The first digital currency to avoid the double-spend problem and cannot be manipulated at its core through inflation or confiscation. Call it the red pill if you like, but it sounds like you are letting your jaded feelings contribute to a mistrust of what has the potential to be the greatest financial equalizer in the history of humanity.

FIL has a nice technical setup, being one of the higher profile ICO’s with a long path to fruition, and after a decent basing process on the heels of its public launch, it appears to be popping on fairly big volume. I’m taking a stab at it here @ $24.40. This should hold above $24, given the price/volume dynamics. I hesitate to use stops on my crypto positions, due to the wild and whippy swings, but I have a mental stop at $24 and if it violates that level without a quick recovery, I will shut this trade down.

A poignant chart comparison, and relevant food for thought. It's generally folly to think that "this time is different"... although (and I may regret saying this), I do believe that with the still relatively small valuation of the crypto asset space while the underlying issues prove their functional use cases, that this time is in fact a little bit different. Nevertheless, we must respect price cycles, and so it is important to rein in the horns a bit here, while waiting to see where ultimate support settles out.
