Minus the premium from the ask price and the dealers bid/spot price.

You easily might pay something like $550 for a 1/4 oz but the spot price is 450 for that weight and say the value of gold goes up and a 1/4 oz is actually worth 550 at spot price. If you sell you might only get $500. So the oz price could go up $400 bucks and you might still be down $50 for example. So the price needs to raise enough that you actually make money after losing out to the premiums you pay

this kind of depends - assuming im not misunderstanding the conversation.

There are usually vendors that will pay you over spot when you sell your PMs back. Make sure you do some homework to find these places. For instance, when I was considering selling my selver to APMEX earlier this year, they were ofering something like $3-4 over spot per coin. I guess because it was in demand, but just saying, dont assume you have to take a loss on spot.

The main attraction of gold is that it corrects for inflation, and the more extreme the economic trouble, the higher it soars, because people seek refuge in it as a safe haven for their wealth. Central banks do the same.

China buys gold with both hands and encourages its citizens to invest in gold to get as much as possible of it within their borders.
Might they be wise to something?

Back when Jesus lived, an ounce of gold in Rome bought you a fine senator's toga with sandals to match, 2000 years later, an ounce of gold buys you a business suit with good shoes.

The main attraction of gold is that on average it isn't going ANYWHERE in terms of the value it contains. That makes it THE hedge for perilous times.

This is good watching:

The fact that conservative radio has been pedalling investment in gold since I can remember makes me think maybe it's them, the gold dealers, and not us that are wise to something.

Gold was one of the biggest advertisements on limbaugh's show

Had you bought gold exactly 10 years ago and invested 1000 dollars,

You would have about 1,250 dollars.

Yeah i was checking out old gold prices

My plan for gold would probably be long term hold to be used not even in the most dire of circumstances (like frodo and the one ring)

But use it if shit really gets bad one day similar to the way it seems asante suggests it.

Safe haven for really bad times and a safety net / precaution in case it comes

Probably for me will be like an expensive but valuable and useful collection and lucky charm type thing

I can pass down to my children and grandchildren

If shit hits the fan so bad it makes fiat and crypto worthless no ones going to want shiny metal. I see it as a goofy hedge in the context that one day normal currency may fail.

Thanks for that link.  I checked it out.  Unfortunately, I live in New York and that site definitely has geofencing, because they immediately discerned I am not eligible to purchase anything they sell but gold.  It was a good thought (hedge) but I'm 68 so "long term" holding of gold is not a viable option for me like it is for you young bucks.

The best part of my day so far was live-watching BTC cross 60,000 for the first time at ~6:30 this morning EST.  I woke up, saw on my phone the price changes during the overnight, fired up my Lenovo Thinkpad and watched the fun. I can say I "was there" the moment it happened.

It ain't Woodstock, but hell, it WAS cool!

Do you think in a shits hit the fan world, will gold be worth more than food, guns, and ammo?

I think I'd invest in guns and ammo before gold in any scenario, I just cannot see a scenario where gold really helps you in a destroyed world.

I wanna know what would have to happen in the world where gold becomes the ideal holding? Right now to me holding gold seems cumbersome, even if the grid shut down and the digital world went offline, gold wont help, guns and ammo though.. but I'm probably missing a lot of info

In a world where aliens come and give us advanced technology but all the wiring has to be gold. That's the scenario where your gold comes into play

I'm going with gun and ammo. I'll stay out of gold for yall, but if you need guns and ammo, I take quality dry food and viable crop seeds, and healthy livestock as payment

Ammo would skyrocket in price in any of these hypothetical scenarios where shit hits the fan. Mostly for hunting and secondarily for defense.

Aliens that can make it here, can mine asteroids and if they're giving out tech I am sure the tech to mine asteroids would also be provided but we will probably already be mining asteroids by then.

Im seeing it being described as long term storage of value into something tangible that has stood the test of time and is likely to remain

Not a post apocalyptic world but our current world

Maybe times are changing and it wont hold the way it has, and be replaced by new things

Seems worth holding some in a diversified portfolio

Be cool to hand some gold coins down to mt kids and their kids once they come, thats a good ways away

I been more focused on what shit people are getting sucked into hard, like hoge finance, whirl finance and safe moon.

These things are going up over 10,000% and shit its pretty ridiculous, if I was a trader or fuck even competent in decentralized trading I might be hopping into whirl and safe moon for a day or 2 maybe 3 lol.
